does anybody else have or had a prob with the 4.2 petrol in the 91' making heaps of strange noises (like someone scratchin a blackboard when ya accelerate) 
and whistling

body mount rubbers are part of your issue. search, plenty on it in the archives

Check fan not rubbing on shroud (broken engine mount)
Check exh not leaking at manifold.

Yeah, Check the body mounts, I had the same problem a while ago!
