Picture a switch on the dash...that's all it is. Depends how far you want to go. Are you running air operated clutch, etc?

i have an on-off switch that controls the on off so no one can short the winch control plug.
then i have another switch on-off-on that controls the in and out.

check out the story and diagram of a 3 pin warn high mount at

Haha :lol: Very technical ;) . Mine is hard wired with a return to centre switch.

UP = In
DOWN = Out

after heaps of trouble finding a momentary 3 position switch, i've decided to mount the winch remote lead socket on dash. then all have to do is plug in normal hand controller. have some velco zippy tie to bundle up excess cable

haven't tried it yet tho cos still in process of mounting solenoids in engine bay

thanks for the link blkmav, might still go for dedicated switch. will try it out and see it goes.

the main reason i went for the socket in the cab tho was to make it kiddie proof, as have kids who seem to love playing with all the switchs in car. and before you say isolating switch in engine bay, have already thought of this. just tought would try socket first, saves me buying switches and only matter of drilling holes later on is needed

Hey Guys,

What sort of switch do you use to disable the winch so the controllers dead ?

I was thinking of using a 100amp relay and a missile switch in the dash, but Im not sure the 100amps would be enough. So at the moment I just disconnected it from the battery when im not using it.

Thanks

This is all I do and just re-connect it as part of getting ready for a drive.

my plan is simply put switch in line with the power feed to the controller. that way only needs to be couple of amps (exact figure not sure, whatever it takes to drive 2 12v solenoids. most dc switches are around 15 - 20 amps tho)

Depends on how tech you want to go.

I ran a on/off switch off the power wire on the solenoids (same wire that feeds the controller when its plugged in) that goes to the dash so that the controler socket is dead. I also wired into this power switch the in/off/out switch to control the winch from the dash.

This was, when the power switch on the dash is off, neither the hand controller will work when its pluged in (or if someone tries to bridge the socket connection) nor will the dash winch switch work.

Couple more wires, but makes the whole system idiot and fool proof.

Yum!
Have pics/graphic of it?
I'm about to install my X9,definitely I want
in-cab controls and I'd like to do a good job like that.
:cool:

Totally ignorant/unskilled in wiring,electrics,circuits and so on.
Luckily my father should be there to help...
:oops:

Does the number of solenoids make any (big) difference?

TIA!

you will have 4 solinoids in the warn pack

thats how mine works as well :cool:

The Superwinch X9 control box only has two solenoids, so the wiring would be even simpler than the Warn with four solenoids...I had saved this in my webpages folder:

Just need to pretend my Defender is a Toyota... :shock:
