Larger intercooler for 4.2 TDI (TD6)...

Gday all,
Been looking at the sad excuse of an intercooler wasting room in my GU. Anyone upgraded this intercooler and if so, did it fit back on top again, and did it make much difference.
Currently running 12psi, plated egr, 3 inch mandrell exhaust with high flow single muffler, fuel up etc.
Waste of time/money, or investment? Don't necessarily want more power (maybe just a bit
), just trying to cool the air more before it runs through the turbo. Would this cool egr's a bit?
Cheers
Chris.

Yes, I have the safari one stuffed down the front but to the right of the radiator if you are looking head on.
works a treat, gets a heap of airflow on the open road and I havn't looked back.
you are right, the standard nissan one is a waste of space.
good luck if you go ahead.

The intercooler actually cools the air after it has been through the trurbo, not before.

Why not try a water to air intercooler? More effecient, less space taken, will reduce inlet temps more than an air to air intercooler.
I have more details if you wish.

only problem with the one they have for the GU's is it is tiny compared to the one they made for the GQ's dont know if there was anyother differances.

Gday mate,
Fair enough, I was hoping to keep the intercooler up top so the radiator gets the full benefit of air coming through.
Did it run any better?
Chris.

Fitting 4 inch kit shortly, the 3 inch rear springs didn't handle towing the other day and my camper is pretty high, so we have worked out that 4 inch kit will be perfect when fully loaded.
Still happy with the truck mate? I think I have a dry spigot bearing so I'll be taking it to Nissan in the next few days to try sort something out. Apart from that...she's a little beauty!

Yeah, very happy with it. I'm amazed how far it can go without any diff locks.

A water to air intercooler works in the following fashion. The system has a resevoir with water in it, an electrical pump to circulate the water, a mini radiator at the front to cool the water and the intercooler that has water flowing thru it to cool the air charge. The intercooler unit comes in different air flow rates depending on the application, have much shorter ducting (generally between 30 to 60 cm) compared to standard air to air, which then allows the turbo to spool up quicker.
As of yet I dont know of any full kits being made, each one that I have seen is custom made to suit each vehicle.
Hope this helps, will be putting one on my 1hdt soon to dyno the results.

Hey Dzltec,
What do you use for your 'cooler core? Do you just waterjacket an air-air core, or do you buy a tube stack type? BTW if you know where to get tube stack coolers, let me know...
Cheers,
Pat

Howdy
Im currently making a water to air intercooler for a GU 4.2 it's slow but getting there. Lot more work but more efficient espicially when slogging in low range at high boast.
