Replacement Alternator

OK Need your professional advice
My current alternator is all broke
need new one..........
I figure since i changin it I may aswell get a better (read BESTEST EVER) one
Any reccomendations ? ? ?

see your auto electrian and ask for a john deer tractor alternator 130 amp should be around $200 NEW

just check at what speed (rpm) they have to spin at to generate the power.
then check the gearing you have make sure the alt wil spin at right speed at low revs, some tractors have large drive pully.

Buy a bosch industrial alt 130 amp.
I paid $200.00 12 months ago.
just need to put a small alt pulley on the alt and away it goes.
same fittings same elec terminals.

HSV Rangie thats exactly what i am looking for... sum one told me there is a 130amp bosh that fits easy, this must be the one you speak of....
All the prices I am getting are bloody rediculous though
CAN YOU SWAP THE PULLEY FROM THE STANDARD ALTS TO THE !#) AMP INDUSTRIAL (farken shift key got stuck)

Anthony, I am not sure what vehicle you have. On my Rangie I have a 90 amp Bosh alternator. When I had to get a new part for it recently, I looked up the model number and found that it was actually off a VK Commodore. Therefore you should be able to pick up one cheaply at wreckers, etc.

yes if you can find one small enough.
needs to be as small as possible. they ned high revs to work.
other option is to have one machined up.

I just wandered round the scrapyard till I found an alt that mounted roughly right and had decent output - got a 45/90A (45A at idle, 90A at speed) off a ford for £15, the equivalent LR unit is about £100.

Ive got a brand bosch harverster Alt 130amp if you want it
Had it as spare for my disco so its been sitting around for a year but not used at all
Was very easy to adapt. A a smaller pulley is the go you get more amps when winching
I dont need the alternator now as the Gen 3 comes with 140amp

Go to an autoelec and ask for a NAB900... its a universal alternator that you can fit to anything... ive fitted about 9 now to various model range rovers and there only $98!!!!!!!!!

I found a Disco alt that fits right in and best of all was 100amp never missed a beat since i put it in and it was 2nd hand
if you can find boch that HSV rangie is talking about for that money then get one!!! FARK lucass

Volvo V6's are the same fit
Commons sizes from early Volvo V6's are 70amp.
Later ones are 90 or 100Amp
Mine is a 90amp from Pick a Part $20
Only draw back. No Tacho output.
Still cheap for charging.......

Diggin this up again as i need a new alternator
My bottyfab work on the last one has payed of (lasted another 5months)
But now its completely dead
like dead dead dead
So i gonna have to splash out and get one and i need it like real asap.
I was considering the volvo option as its cheap buts its got no output for tacho
I wanna go to Landcruiser Mountain park this weekend coming so i really gotta get off my arse and do it

I've got a Bosch unit that's usually on a XE Falcon.
You just need a top adjusting bracket bootie fabbed and your done!
They're dirt cheap from wreckers, and don't usually have mud in them.

If yours is a petrol vehicle it'll probably take it's rev counter feed from the coil not the alt, so it won't matter. Have a look - if you have a wire going to the "W" terminal then it uses the alt, if not it uses the coil.

Fridge, Rangies tacho feed is from the alternator not coil, so the pulley size is critical for correct operation.

dunno if anyone else has heard this. but apparently a mitsubishi Sigma one can be used on rangies.i was told this by a auto leccy. no mods need to be made even the brackets bolt straight on!

I have a Magna Bosch 85 amp on my 92 Rangie. It cost $200 brand new .
The brackets fit correctly
You need to lengthen the adjuster by about 2inches
To use the original size belt, you need to gring some material from the bracket, to enable the alternator to swing in far enough
Mine came with a multi groove pulley. Get the auto lec to rummage through his bin to find the smallest v belt pulley which will be about 10% bigger than the Lucas one. I had to stuff around a bit to align the pulleys. you can shim it with washers, or as in my case cut the back off the pulley and put it on the front by putting it in a drill and cutting with a hacksaw blade.
Pay the auto elec to fit a W wire to run the tach, (about $40)
Mine had an injection type plug for the control wires , so you have to cut and join those wires.
I joined the main power wire using one of those DOOf Doof power block joiners.
I am very happy with mine.

Most auto lecs know which one fits. I found surprisingly that an Auto Electrician was the cheapest to buy from. Mine had one in stock. You can pretty quickly see if it fits. The ears are a different distance apart but one ear has a moveable sleeve specifically designed to take up any slack.
If you want to buy a second hand one which I did at first, just look at Magnas until you find one that looks right. BUT be warned. I grabbed one from a reject pile for $10, but it wasn't worth fixing.

That's funny as all the (V8) Rangies / petrol powered anythings I've looked at have the tacho fed off the coil, maybe it's peculiar to Oz then?

No it's not unique to Oz.
All EFi Land Rover V8s take their tacho drive from the alternator. Originally this was done due to concerns about the tacho interfering with the fuel injection system that takes it's rpm feed from the coil.
If you fit a coil driven tacho to one of these you are supposed to put a diode into the tacho feed to reduce the danger of adding or masking ignition events for the ECU.... of course nobody does and it normally works OK as any noise on the feed just weakens or richens the mixture a bit
