Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey guys,

I am looking at buying a 4by, i'm on a fairly tight budget as well. I had a quick look today at an 1988 swb patrol. It looke pretty stock and was a 4.2L petrol with 285,000km on it. I know thats a lot of km's but what is the limit before the engine/car decides to die on me? Also i noticed a tiny bit of rust on the bonnet towards the windscreen but it only looked like a bit of surface rust. It is for sale in a dealer for $7990.
What opinions do you guys have on this?

prices would b little higher up your way no doubt

Where should i be looking for rust and problems with the vehicle? It seems to have a second hand front diff on it possibly from the wreckers. I really have no idea about GQ's so any help would be greatfully appreciated

I've got a GQ shorty petrol and mine is on gas i would hate to have to run it on straight petrol for a daily driver $$$$. but if it's on gas with 280.000km on the clock th head is probly stuffed. Mind has got that amout km's and it's on it's second head.

Mine has 280,000kms on it and its going strong.

Check it thouroughly for rust and have a reputable mechanic check it out.

PS. I bought my 89 LWB 12 months ago for $7000. Had 240,000 on the clock back then. It has cost me new tyres, and the auto died, so bout 3K extra. Not too bad....I hammer the crap out of it regularly when I tow the zook Still going strong

i have 280k on my 91 mav shorty and the motor is extremely healthy..the motor runs on straight lpg through a straight lpg mixer..never misses a beat. aslong as the motor is serviced regularly u will get a long life from the tb42..they were designed from nissan to accept lpg as they power nissan forklifts..solid long term proposition.
my auto is the weekest link.. starting shift like crap and use tranny fluid.. but u gotta love a auto off road

dude shop in the sydney area for a swb mav or patrol.. u will get them around the 5 mark with a bit of haggling.. same age and k's as what ur talking.. paid 4800 for my 91 xlt mav with power everything and lpg setup and factroy sunroof..bargains are out there...

Check above the front windscreen and the rear windows for rust.

It's running on straight petrol. What kind of fuel consumption are you guys getting??
I'm in no rush to buy right now, so i have plenty of time to shop around. It will mainly be used as my daily driver during the week and then off-road whenever i get the chance (I'm just starting YR 12 so spare time is getting harder to find) would it be more worthwhile buying something which needs a bit of work done to it for cheaper or save up the extra $$$$ and get something that is in really good condition??

Get somthing that is in A1 condition champ.
