For 35"+ tyres on a disco will the 24 slpine MD or 30 spline Macnamara axles handle more hard core off-roading
I know they are made of different material which matterls more than # of splines in shaft break points.

JM 30 spline will be stronger, but just because they are a larger diameter (1.31" vs 1.24"). I have known plenty of people run 35's with powerful V8's and MD axles without any axle strength problems.

I don't know anyone who has broken (or even twisted) one of the current generation of MD axles made from AMS6418 - (there were some breakages of old generation axles made from EN25).
Jacmac axles are made from EN25 (or EN25 not sure). MD claims that AMS6418 is stronger than EN25 but Jacmac apparently say that MD weren't heat treating their EN25 axles properly.

I do. Defender 110 Salisbury, 35" ET's, locked, 200kw chip/intercooler and about 60 tonne worth of crap in the boot. Twisted rear maxi axles though not quite broken.

Hi Guys, MD isn't so common over here in the UK (as its a PITA to get hold of and costs a bomb) but a few of us guys run them. I've not broken a CV yet (but I've only been MDing for about 8 months) but Tony Cordell has (he's been giving them abuse for well over a year now). His let go on the stub shaft splines (not seen that before...), damaged the drive flange and wrecked the stub axle. Seemed to be a fatigue issue as he wasn't doing anything unusual at the time.
Over here we tend to go through a fair few CVs (some guys tend to do one an event ) and most of the time the inner shaft's OK. I've seen very slight spline damage a couple of times, normally just a small burr that only needs 30 seconds with a neddle file, but thats still pretty rare.

Umm, where have you heard this? As I understand it, MD is using genuine CVs. Nothing custom at all.
Now GBR is having CVs made out of some nice alloys, but they cost a fair bit. Because of the cost, most people have not been going that route and have instead been converting to Toy CVs and using Longfields.
IIRC, MD looked into getting CVs made for them. The batch turned out weaker than AEU2522s. I only know this as one of my mates was on holiday in Brisbane at the time and went to get a set of halfshafts while he was there (it was his wife's wedding present to him ).

Gday Jay, Not me. I've got a disco and the Maxi's have been drama free to date in my truck. With the Defender, to be honest I'm not sure what he did with respect to the repair in terms of billing. I hadn't thought about it until just now. Off-roading hard core - about once or twice per month and those axles would have been in for about 2.5 years as a guess.

??? Surely he can make a 30/30 0r 24/30 spline front axle since he currently makes 30/27 and 24/27 spline. They may not be off the shelf though like the other axles.

as far as i know these new cv's aren't available yet. Mal still has the aeu2522, but he is still to see the new ones. I am waiting for them. they are being made for great basin rovers, mostly there design with a bit of Mals help. they are made from 4340 300m. the first batch were prototypes and have been changed slightly, i don't think they were weaker than the aeu2522's though. people like ben, bill and sam (along with most others) have much more knowledge than me, but i guess your drive line is only as strong as its weakest link. so either MD or Jac Mac will be a great improvement over stock but what will break next???? Apart from his products, Mal is a great guy with a very good customer service reputation.

as far as i know these new cv's aren't available yet. Mal still has the aeu2522, but he is still to see the new ones. Been a while out of here, but for good reason (was wheeling for 4 days straight)...
Glad to say nothing broke!!! (drivetrain) and Jay can attest to the heavy offroading I slapped to the truck...
Michael - Keith or Rovertracks is discussing 30 spline cromo axles for Rovers to match the 30 spline CVs...I should be getting some by Monday (in NY now) and bring them down to Lebanon (if I don't get hell from the security)...it'll be a bolt on thing for us Toy conversionists...
