22r where a 3y was

Ok,a mate of mine has a 85 hilux with a tired 3y 2 litre,is thinking of replacing the 3y.he wants a little more power but isnt interested in V8 or V6 conversions.i suggested the 22r 2.4 litre and we can get a good complete engine for $1000,he's happy with that.not being a four cylinder expert i am pretty sure it will bolt up to the 3y bellhousing and engine mounts, seeing i will be doing the job i thought i would check with you guys to see if there are any major hassles.i think it will be a fairly straightforward job,but would appreciate any comments,as i normally would just rip the four pot out and throw it on the tip

not being a four cylinder expert i am pretty sure it will bolt up
i think it will be a fairly straightforward job

You will need the 22R bellhousing
you will need to make or replact the chassis engine mounts
you will need the 22R exhaust, accelerator cable, the wiring is on the opposite side for the 22R coil and ignition, alternator etc
you can use the original radiator

Pretty sure the mounts aren't the same. Gearbox will most likely be G52 so yep you'll need a bellhousing to suit. You'll need to cut and make new mounts.

If you're going to be cutting mounts etc for a 22R i'd think about doing something a little better. Search for a supra motor swap and you'll find it will end up easier, probably more economical and have a shizload more nuts.

thanks boys.yeah already worked out most of what you have said, and the supra thing,Nah he really doesnt want to go to those extremes, otherwise i would just jam a V8 in.

If you go off what the supra boys on the board say (esp. Suprasurf) putting the supra in is about the same amount of work as what your talking for the 22r, mounts wiring bellhousing. Seriously I wouldnt bother swapping a 22r in place of a 3y. I used to drive with a guy with a 22r when I had my 3y and youd be hard pressed to pick the power difference (yes, we tried to burn eachother off at lights while 10 yr olds with malvern stars overtook us). If I were you I'd be trying to talk him into the supra swap. Theres plenty of info on the net and guys on tihs board happy to help out.

I wouldnt go the 22R although they are more powerfull than the 3Y and are a great motor they are still carbed. Go with a later model 3RZFE 2.7ltr Hilux motor. This will fit just as easy as the 22R and is also EFI.

go the supra 2.8, cheap engine price, powerful, easy to put in, cheap to run. never looked back after my conversion.

I have been told of Complete Manual 2WD import front cuts with 3RZFE's for $1700 on the gold coast.

22r swap

hello hiluxv8

if you do go the 22r swap the engine mounts for the chassis can be bought from toyota.from memery around $46.00 bucks (4-5 years ago)

as i did a 3y to 3l diesel convertion for a mate

also with the 22r / supra convertion thay both use the same bellhousing pattern & also chassis mount location so if you fit the 22r now you can bolt in the 6cyl later with out redoing the enginr to chassis mounts

but would have to redo the exhaust/electrics etc
the 1985-1986 corona use the 22re injection if you wanterd the extra kw/mn

22r carby
74kw @ 4400
185 nm @ 2800

22re efi = 86kw @4000 rpm

4y-e 74kw @ 4400 rpm
185nm @ 3000 rpm

3rz-fe 112kw @ 4800
240nm @ 4000

hope that helps

only prob with the 2.7efi motor is you gotta get it to 4800rpm to actually make it DO something.

was the most hated vehicle in our fleet the 2.7efi extra cab, people took a 5LE 3.0D over it!!!

I just had my 4.2L HD-FTE 79 series to play with ;)

i have an 84 hilux which i am doing the same putting a 22r motor and box in mine, i did not have to make mounts, all you do is on the engine block there is an extra set of bolt holes for the engine mounts so move them back and they bolt straight in, the wiring i have ran the complete loom and speedo cluster, all fits into place, will upload photos when i next on,

I'd be talking him into the 3rz sounds like alot of work to put a 22r in for not much gain, look around and you should be able to find a 3r for around a grand with what you need for the conversion
