Salisbury question

Post by cols110 »

Ello all, I`ve got a query, I fitted a Detroit locker to my 110 yesterday and had a set of suposedly heavy duty GKN axles to go in as well, but the axles I pulled out had longer splines and were the same size, except for the raised portion, so I threw em back in again as they had no spline wear, I wish I`d had a STD one to compare it with to see what I`ve got.

Here`s a few pics of the two axles, I have a feeling the supposedly HD GKN`s are actually STD salisbury, they all measured up between 1.175 and 1.190, my origional ones also had a few markings as well, that someone might reconise.

Any ideas of what they are, STD or sometime better?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The short splined ones look like Defender axles. If the overall length is shorter, return them and get proper genuine 110 axles. Standard factory Defender axles are of very poor quality steel and the shorter splines wear more quickly.

Thats interesting, as they are an inch or so shorter, glad I did`nt fit em then, looks as though that was 50quid badly spent. :bad-words:

Just to clarify, when Bill say "Defender" he is talking of the later style axles versus "110" which are the earlier style axles. The newer axles have narrower hubs and thus shafts.

If you are putting a Detroit in, make sure you install quality AFTERMARKET shafts unless you like breaking them. I would suggest Maxidrive in this instance as you are staying 24 spline. Some other brands have been known to break.

Thanks all, that maeks a lot of sense, my 110 is an early defender, so it might have come with the old style axles then.

As for MDs, yes I`d love some but the budget does`nt allow yet, next time we head back to OZ I might indulge myself. :D
