Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I've been looking at rim / tyre combinations as I'm about to go 35's on the middy. MTR's need a minimum rim width of 8.5in but I've heard max legal size is 8in. Where is this in writing?? (for vic) You see sports cars with rims fatter than 8in!!!!


Can't find my tyre placard (does an 87 middy have one?) and the specified tyre in the manual said:

7.50-16-6PRLT
7.50R-16-6PRLT
10R 15-6PR

Searched on all 3. Can't fand anything that I can use to get a max rim width or tyre diameter.

The big dilemma is, what ever I get, I want engineered so insurance companies can't give me the finger

with a engineers you can go whatever you want aslong as its written on the engineers report and he is happy with it

the max is 25mm wider than the largest factory rim for that model without a engineers

I don't know if Vic has the max 8" rim width rule that NSW does.

But the rules state that in NSW the rim can't be any wider than 8" (older trucks can provided they are over certain weight), yet lots of engineers will pass the wider rims so should be OK.

If you do fit a 35 MTR to 8" rim you could get pinged for it. I went the expensive way- a 315/75 x 16 MTR (35" tyre on 16" rim) which is manufactured to fit down to a 8" wide rim.

Thru an engineer you can get a derating letter from the tyre manf allowing the use of 8" rims to suit auzzie state laws. (vic etc)
I have an approved new compliance plate for 12.5/35/15s on 8" rims

As far as Vic Roads is concerned you cannot go larger than 25mm wider in rim or tyre than the largest rim or tyre the maufacture specifies for that modal.

10inch rims are no go in Vic...

8's are the largest for a cruiser.. Darren Mc tried to get his troopy engineered with 15x10's and never succeeded even though overseas they come with them. (Iceland).

Just in time!!! I thought that was the case. Suspension lift goes in tomorrow so rims and tyres should happen late this week or next week. Yay!!

Accordinly to the rules you should be able to run 9" rims.......
Not sure if you can get them or if it would be of much benifit..........

Has anyone had tyres engineered recently in Vic? I tried to call the engineer who did the paperework on my V8 conv but he isn't taking anything else on at the moment so I'll need to find someone else.

Thats NSW too, Vic was no go, but may be different now... who knows.

You can not over rule an A.D.R. even with an engineers certificate.If you have rims wider than 8" and had an accident where the coroner became involved in the investigation and they found the rims had been engineered,then the engineer that passed them would be charged.A federal rule will always take precedent over a state law.

But why can they be allowed to be engineered if this is the case?
Does the driver now become liable aswell?

Im not planning to run 10inch rims, but for all of those people who have them engineered already this sucks!

Get dumbdunce to call customer service at Vicroads and see if they can answer it

The engineer I used was called Jeff Watters. He is based in Ringwood somewhere.

I know these guys spend years and $$$ getting qualified but it didn't take him much time to earn my $600 for the eng cert. I think he had done a few Toyotas before and knew what he was looking for but the whole process was efficient and painless and importantly... Fair.

Hope I can find an engineer who will take the same approach on my 35in tyres (in Vic)

As for rims, The Mickey Thompson were lookign great as they came with a bit of extra offset but at $300+ each, maybe not. What else has about 1in more than Landcruiser offset?? (And hopefully comes in a polished finish like my current rims!!)

Sunnys at $95 for black or $60 for white are the best value rims.

what offset do they come in? I've searched on google and its not my friend!!!! Can't find a page with specs etc.

You can get rims made to pretty much any offset... Grimbo I think has had them done for his zook... call Procomp in Narre Warren they do the rims, then go to eastern wheel works to get modded.
