Winch Comparison

Hi All
Finally got around to diggin out the only issue of 4x4 Australia that I've ever purchased. The reason I bought it you ask....the best damn winch comparison I've seen to date. If you can get a hold of the September 2003 edition, grab it, its a good read and comparison.
They test seven winches in the 9000-9500 range, all low mounts. They tested Magnum 9K; Superwinch X9; Premier Winch; Warn XD9000; Brawn ZR-9500; TJM OX9500 and the T-MAX EW-9500.
Prices ranged from $1350 (Magnum) to $1925 (Superwinch) with the Warn coming in at $1850. They tested amp draw at no load, 6000lb and 9000lb, line speed at those pulls and did a stall test on most of them.
Very interesting outcomes. The Warn was quickest no load by a big margin (11m/m), next was the Magnum (8.1m/m) and the others ranged between 4.8-6.8m/m.
The amp draws was the big one. At 6000lb it ranged from 215A (Premier) to a massive 385A (Magnum). The Warn drew 335A. At 9000lbs the range was from 276A (Premier) to 530A for the Magnum, with Warn drawing 434A.
Line speed under load was also interesting: At 6000lbs ranged from 1.9m/m (Warn) to 2.5m/m (Premier). The others ranged from 2.1-2.3 m/m. At 9000lbs, line speed ranged from .9m/m (Warn) to 1.9m/m (Premier). Magnum same as Warn and the others achieved between 1.4 and 1.8 m/m.
A stall test wasn't conducted on the T-Max, Brawn and Ox as the T-Max broke the test bench. Other issues also involved cable breakage. What was mentioned as well was that a winch should stall and not break cable.
All in all an interesting test!! Whilst Warn have the reputation, I'd reckon the small operators amy be more willing to give better back up in an effort to get more of this lucrative market.
Maybe its worth taking off our "I'll only ever buy a Warn" blinkers.
To me line speed no load isn't as important as speed under load and amp draw.
I reckon a Premier is the go for me when I get the $$. The story also stated that the Prem' was noticeably cooler after its runs. Well worth $1500 asking price!!!
Bring on the debate!!!
If anyone's interested, I can email the whole story.
Regards
