Does anyone know how stressful it is to change my gearbox from a 3-speed to a 4-speed out of a later model Rangie? Its a 85 auto and theres nothing wrong with the gearbox or transfer case or anything but i do alot of highway driving aswell as a bit of bashing around the bush and i just need an extra gear... also cause the 3.5 drinks petrol like its free or something! Does anyone have a 4-speed and tranfer case they mite wanna get rid of?? Also does anyone know how much i could get for my 3-speed and transfer case?

Whats the three speed look like physically. Is it the TF 727 and lt230 transfer or the earilier borg warner one (I think) with half the manual gearbox/transfer (lt95) case stuck on the back. If you already have the TF 727 and lt230 combo then I think you will need only swap the auto box and the transfer will be the same.

What year model is the rangie??

Either way if you are swaping the entire gearbox/transfer it shouldnt be to hard. Just make sure you get absolutely everything to do the swap out of the donor car (incl tailshafts, brackets, all nuts and bolts etc) it wil make it just that much easier.

A ZF 4apd auto will bolt straight in place of the TF727 but make sure you get all the shifter linkages, converter and so on with the box. No need to replace the transfer plus with the 1/1 gearing of your current t/case and the extra gear you will be just idling along at 100k's. :D

Piss the T/Flyte off. They are a good auto, but not with the 3.5 Rover engine. The ZF kills it in all aspects, they are dead reliable and worth the effort. A good one shouldn't set you back a fortune (about $800 for a good one with about 120,000 kms on the clock, more for a later and low milage unit), but get all the bits and fittings otr you could be out of pocket more than you would like.

I would alos look into the grearing, as someone here has mentoioned, the 1/1 gearing is a bit tall . Good on road, but crap off road and makes the engine a bit of a slug!!

My 92 Vogue has done 252,000 and the ZF hasn't been rebuilt, only serviced whe it needs it.

Best of luck,

1985 had the Lt230 so the swap is so easy.
The LT230 from the 3 speed will have 1.003-1 high range gears if you have a stock 3.5 with or without larger tyres then it will be gutless, will hate the sight of a hill.

All RR and discos fitted with 5 speed manuals and 4 speed autos had the LT230 T/case with 1.192 high range gears, except when fitted with a diesel then they had 1.4-1 high range.

The auto and all brackets fitting shifter ETC: price from $1200.00.regards
