How do ya fit a tacho without using GXL dash? Do not want to move sub fuel to roof. Has anybody done this. Seem very little people know, even toyota mechanics???

First of all, there is no sender in the pov pack fuel pump, so you either swap the fuel pump from one that has the sender, or put an aftermarket sensor on the alternator. As far as the dash gauge is concerned, a 2 3/8" tach mounted on the windscreen pod would work.

My 80 is a STD with no tacho and I've been asured many times by repretible people that Toyata fitted a govenor to prevent over revving, so save the heartache and money and buy some beers.

You can get an electronic*(digital) Tacho. from Flex drive Agencies for around $250 from memory. But ,Yeah, it's limited.

I did have a pump with tacho output, but it is now sold. I do however, still have the diesel GXL dash if u want a tacho and volt meter and oil meter. I have the senders aswell, just not the tacho drive for the pump. Ive heard of the alt drive b4, maybe Toyota will sell you the pickup for the tacho...ity screws into the back of the pump and picks up a hall effect signal from some magnets. U can use your dash fuel gauge to read the sub if you run a relay to switch signals from the tank senders (like the 100 series does) and then u dont need the roof console.

Indeed they did, but all the same I have no Tacho and wouldn't mind one....

Although I have no idea what 2400 rpm up a hill sounds like??? RRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRR I think?

Works going up in gears, but coming down hills using gears is another thing....when is the motor revving too fast?
This is where a diesel motor will come unstuck.

bit of a grave dig, but yeah I'm facing the same problem now. Want a tacho on the poverty pack 80 series.

Was on the car when I bought it.

But when I get home (I'm currently working in indo) I'll see if I can find part numbers and manufacture and I'll post a couple picks of the sensor.

Another easy way to get a tacho is to fit a Tiny Tach (www.tinytach.com).
All you need to connect it to are ground on the engine, power (anything from 9 -32v even a 9v smoke detector battery) and clamp the transducer to any injector pipe. It keeps a total running hours, two service intervals, highest engine revs reached and of course current RPM in 10 rpm steps.
You only have to measure the outside diameter of your engines injector pipes to get the right sized transducer when purchasing.
While there is an Aussie distributor (approx $AU240) it is much cheaper to buy online from the US website, shipping was $us11 for 5 day airmail, tach costs $us65, all up around $AU100.
The only drawback I've found is that it hasn't got any internal lighting so a bit hard to see at night. Shouldn't be too hard to put a led near it to provide illumination.

I fitted a GXL dash to my 80s poverty pack, and the tacho will not work without replacing your injector pump. The pump may look the same and it should be just a matter of screwing in the sensor, but, it is a completely different pump. The wiring is in the left footwell for the roof console but it was difficult sending the wire through the 'A' (widscreen) pillar. Once i did this the fuel guage worked. Another thing was, you require the oil pressure sender off the donor vehicle also.I sold the vehicle before getting the tacho working.
