AIR COMPRESSOR / TANK / HORN SETUP
G'day all i own a 40 series cruiser, was wanting to install compressor/airtank/airhorns (not those gay autobarn plastic ones, REAL horns from a truck wreckers) has anyone done a similar install or could recomend tank sizes/ suppliers around melbourne??? any info would help. cheers,

I have an air tank in my lux filled by an ARB compressor using the factory ARB press cut off switch that shuts off at aprox 100psi.
The tank in mine is an old out of date primus gas bottle (free) but an old tank from a truck would be better.
I have a large air horn from a truck mounted under the tray out of sight and its LOUD! hehe just about gave a woman a heart attack once literally (
she had a week heart).
Also run my ARB locker off the setup as well only problem is it takes a while to fill the tank up so before you lock the diff you have to wait a couple of minutes for the tank to fill.
Handy to have air to blow out filters and reseat beads too which you couldnt do with just the compressor.
Paul.

the guys at work have that exaxt setup.... i have half the kit too...
basiclly we buy in truck airhorns(as we fit them to half of sydney's trucks)
they coiem with a 3.8lt air tank(220psi) and they just split the lines and use arb pressure swicth for the right size...with a had wired in MAX AIR wich pumps the tank up in less than a minute and keeps it filled when needed:) works a treat. I have the horns and tank just no diff locks yet but will do the same setup!

Use an ARB Solenoid connected to a truck air-horn. Wire your existing horn wire via a 2 position switch then to the solenoid. When you press the horn, it activates the solenoid and in turn, the horn. With a large enough airtank, you should be able to get plenty of 'honks' before air runs out. Wire it via a 2 position switch so you can keep your existing horn when req. Airhorns can be sourced from truck wreckers. I've used a brand called 'HADLEY' for my set-up

With a compressor and tank existing I have found the cheapest way out of the air horn situation was to buy a set for a place like Hy-way truck accessories as they include the air solinoid. Most of the ones I have pulled off trucks have not had this and the cost of it on its own was around $70 IIRC but they sell a two horn kit with solinoid for $85 when I got mine

Thanks heaps for the info guys i think i'll hav a look around a few wreckers this weekend. The standard horns on my shorty are far from enough, people hear it and expect to see a little buzz box behind them.
If i mound the compressor in the engine bay would it get too hot?? (as it gets damn hot under there in summer) Or in the cab would it be too loud???

vraamm: yeah i think they are legal as long as you still have your original horns and have a switch to switch em in/out. What do you mean use my roll cage?? (dont have one but this sounds interesting) could you use the tubing as an airtank?? have u done this???

yeah you use the tubing as an air tank. it is unusual but i'm not certainly the only one who has it. i got the vehicle already with it bout 10yrs ago. i have a air con compressor which pumps air into the roll cage. also dash gauge for pressure, switch and pressure release valve. don't know how many litres it holds but the bar is at least 4inches in outer diameter. i have had up to 250psi in there with no probs. it pumps up tyres like the servo and you can hook up a regulator to run tools off it too. can take pics if you want.
truck wreckers you say for the horn eh?

Hey vraamm - post pics m8. would be interested in seeing this roolbar air tank set up.
Thinking of doing the same to mine.
How many liters do you all reckon in a 3" twin roll bar set up?

Now that's a classic - thanks for the laugh Kranked Dirt...
I have had mine setup for about a year and a half now, forking loud eh'...
No compressor as of yet, just added a coupling valve onto the tank so i can fill it from anywhere i go. Tank (approx 25-30 litres) Horn, Solenoid and air tube around $100 i think.
I think it was the American trucks at the wreckers that were 12 Volt systems. Test the horn prior to buying, just run a air nozzle into the bottom and give it a TOOT...

Tried this when I hooked mine up, ARB compressor primed to 100psi, hooked up airr horn 3 feet from my head and touched the solenoid wires on the battery, just about blew my ear drums apart

ok heres some photos
http://au.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/vraamm ... aa&.src=ph
hope they work.
had a look at the bar today, its labelled as having a 3" internal diameter. no idea what the volume it holds is though. it will do all my 235/85 16s from 16-42psi in one hit when pumped to 180psi.
will be putting a proper filter on the compressor soon rather than a piece of rag. any ideas which type to use?

I have my air horns under the left guard, hidden by the plastic liner. a good spot for scaring cyclists!! i run a airhose from that to a air switch in the cab, then another hose to the tank from the switch. in the line from the tank to the switch, i have a filler valve, and i fill it at the servo's. i fill it as much as they will go, usually about 70 + psi. i get about 10 - 20 toots. depending how long i use it for. the tank is about 20l. i bought it all out of the trading post for $100 then went to enzed for the hose and fittings.

Best idea is to run a hose from the compressor inlet up to the engine side of your aircleaner box and tap into it so the compressor is breathing air through the air cleaner.

on a similar idea to this, would you be able to plumb a hose running from the outlet from your tank to the inlet manifold of my diesel engine and wire it up to a switch and you can temporarily press it to get a quick hit of power, similar to a supercharger / turbo? this probably sounds pretty stoopid... but i cant see why not
indubitably

That would be a good way to cleanout your airfilter because there would be nothing to stop it from blowing backwards

it would lightly supercharge your engine!!

I have this type of set up under the bonnet of the Rocky. Twin solinoid type air horns running off a smallish tank, about 12 inches by 6 inches. Air comes in through an air compressor filter, into a air conditioner compressor. It leaves the compressor forward, through the original air conditioner piping, through a large oil cooler, then back through a non return valve into the tank. Off the tank is a pressure relief valve, quick release for tyre and air tool hose, high/low ARB pressure switch, and air line to pressure gauge on the dash. Oil cooler is behind grill, to cool the air before it gets to the tank, and is mounted vertically so condensed water, and excess oil from lubrication pools in the bottom of the cooler. This also again filters the air, like an old landrover oil bath air filter.
Compressor is set up to cut in and out automatically through the ARB switch. As pressure drops below about 80psi, compressor cuts in, and cuts out again at around 115psi. Compressor is powered of a relay that is switched through ignition, in case pressure drops overnight, and compressor clutch cuts in and flattens battery.
With this system, I always have at least 80psi on tap, and I can inflate 31's from 15 to 32psi in about 30 secs. On trips, I usually have people lined up to inflate tyres, instead of them relying on electrics. Inflation can be made even quicker by idleing up the engine till just under switch cut out pressure.
Oh, and the horns scare the sheet out of people too.
Costs, Air horn kit/tank/solinoid/gauge kit, about $130
Compressor, Sanden 508 $nil to $50
plumbing and fittings, about $50
ARB switch $???
For the money and time to set it up, it will far far far outlast and out pump ANY electric 12v compressor on the market.
