Gear changing problems NO NEUTRAL????

Having just put my engine and gearbox(5 speed manual) back into my zook, I decided to run it just for a test. The only thing that I touched on the gear box was the gear shift. It was removed to allow the engine to be removed. The engine and gearbox where both removed as one unit.
My problem is that I have now reinstalled the gear shifter, but the transmission will remain in some gear. Even when the shift is in neutral. It appears to change gears properly, has no problem spinning over in any gear and reverse also appears to work properly. Any Ideas as to why I have NO Neutral. Did I somehow stuff up when put the shift back in and locked it in a gear. The selectors all appear to line up properly.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

With the selectors in this position the jack shaft turns over at about the same speed as first gear :?

You should be able to flip that tab over on the left to confirm that it is in the correct position too... i'd suggest doing that first...

next option... put the gearstick in and bolt it in into position and see if you can select all 5 + 1 gears... if you can - then she is all fixed... if not, then your selector forks (or more the position of the stick) is out of wack.

note: if you have no oil in the box it could all just be turning everything over... also, once you get the engine all bolted up and try driving it around a bit - that will tend to place enough "load" on the gearbox to be able to turn the jackshaft without turning over the gearbox... i.e. there is nothing to stop it from turning unless the engine is there...

you can double check that if you have the gearbox and engine apart by carefully holding onto the input shaft in the bellhousing and turning the jackshaft... they should turn independently of each other.

hope that helps... if not - shoot a PM to vitara jim (i think he's pretending to be sierra jim now) because i know that he has his gearsticks out of his 5 speed as we speak.

cheers

thanks greg.
i will check everything again, change the oil and see what happens. There is oil in the gear box, but it probally needs to be changed. When the stick was i before i could still change to all gears normally, thats what really started to confuse me. I get my new tailshaft next week so i can at least drive it in and out of the shed a bit, I've always the neutral on the transfer case.
If its still playing up after that then i guess the something must be really out of wack, i'll pull it back out and pull it apart. But thats not something that i really wanta do at the moment.
