what size tyres are you running (or planning to run?) the gears won't get you any further, but they will potentially save you from damage and get you where you're going more safely.

get both
no point in having traction, and then having no gearing to cope with the traction

Get locker first, then gears.

What size tires??? If you've got +36" go the crawlers but in the long run you will need the front locker as well!

Get the reduction gears first. Speed will get you into more trouble than a lack of traction.
If you can climb the obstacle slow enough you might be able to keep throttle below the point where you break traction. If you've only got the locker you may still need too much speed to keep in your power band.
Cheers,
Scott

id go the locker any day.. low range will gear u down enuff aslong as ur not running massively oversize tyres..with locked diffs front and back ull be roses..
dont get me wrong though..u can never have too low gearing for crawling, but in my oppinion (which might or might not count for much) double lockers and low range will get u 99.8% of places u will need to go, and with all that traction u shouldnt need to point and shoot..i guess it depends how far u wanna go and how deep ur pockets are..

depends on how much welding wire u got

Stocker with a locker

2 Totally different things designed for different reasons..
locker will give you traction where gears wont..
gears will give you control in slow work where locker wouldnt. but remember normal low range can be handy sometimes..

I was forced to get rockhoppers as i have a 2.8 and 35`s
The low gearing has done more for my 4b than i ever thought possible

The hidden agenda is the time is coming to replace the bearings in my transfer case. I thought....you know...while I was in there....I could....you know....do what I always do

and take it one step further
I reckon locker is the go tho always interested to hear all the $0.02

Just to be different im going to suggest you buy a car fridge freezer.
Then at least if stuck as you made the wrong decision an ice cold beer will await you!!!

Thats exactly what I did.
I new that one day soon I would want lower gears and my transfer bearings were a bit noisy so I bit the bullet and chucked a gear set in.
Makes driving stuff so much nicer being able to idle over big obsticles.
But having said that a front locker will def get you further.
Paul.

I have neither of these, but if I was to choose out of lockers and gears I would go rear locker first, then gears, then front locker.

Gears first. Less chance of blowing bits up or rolling the rig that way.
Approach obstacles slower etc etc.
If you're still only on slightly bigger rubber then probably could go the front locker first... but who does that?

so i spose you don't have a rear lsd then if your bearings are noisy get the reduction gears 2 birds with one stone then get both lockers

I dont have either but why dont you pull out the mig, weld your spider gears and get crawler gears? but seriously get the crawler gears first cause its alot better to go home after not making something due to lack of traction then to go up somethhing with lots of traction and too much speed and roll the thing and take it to its new home at the wreckers.
JMO even though it aint worth much

I run 35's and not much else in the driveline has changed.
Just went out the back and had a play and decided that I would go for crawlers next in my 40 just cause I need the rev's and therefore speed up to keep any consistent power.
I am going to start a new poll though, crawlers or 2nd transfer?
