Is the rear third member in the 2nd Gen v6 4runner the same as the 2.8d 4runner.

Its the same size 8" and can be used in a hilux housing. Is that what you wanted to know?.

With the v6 complete third being stronger with the extra fin on the carrier I was wondering if the 2.8 is the same and if the surfs are the same aswell

I think the V6 is the only one with the extra webbing on the housing, you'll also need to space the ring gear if your gonna use 4.8's or buy the V6 gears from the states.

Here's a set of pics to show the differences in them.

The first pic is of a inline 4 diff with a v6 diff in the background. Note the v6 diff has more fins and the location of them. It's easy to visually identify a v6 diff. I always look for the top fin that runs down almost to the input shaft drive flange.

The 2nd pic is an open carrier inline 4 diff, 4.10:1 ratio, coded G294 with 2 pinions

The 3rd pic is of a open carrier v6 diff, 4.10:1 ratio, coded G294 with 4 pinions.

The 86-87 US turbo trucks have G292s with 10 inch brakes. The 86+ US v6 trucks have G294s with 10 inch brakes.

Sorry to drag this back up guys, I've read through this thread, but still have a query. Do I need to mod anything to fit v6 third member to a 2.8L 4runner rear?

Simple answer is NO you don't need to mod anything it will bolt straight up.
