Hi guys!

I finally bought a new head for the bj40 and in time got the thing put on and all back together but now im having troubles starting it.

Everything i believe is connected properly and i've primed the diesel

The battery has gone dead so we tried to jump it and the engine turned over but wouldn't fire so we tried again and this time got nothing, the edic motor moves into position and glow plugs heat up but get nothing else at all!

So tried to roll start it and all it does it cough and splutter....

Any suggestions as to what the problem may be????

Cheers

Dan

are you sure the glows are getting hot?

did you adjust the valve rocker clearances when the new head went on?

is there fuel primed all the way to the back of the injectors? with an inline fuel pump you need to crack the lines at the back of each injector and crank the motor to get fuel up - once it is leaking from the lines with no bubbles then close them up again.

how long has it been sitting without running? is there any possibility of moisture having got into the fuel tank, and black algae growing? could have clogged the filter/lines?

if it's been sitting for a long time have mice or cockaroaches made a nest in the air filter? sounds dumb but it happens.

good luck!

i had the same problem and it was due to fuel not being bled properly.
once i bled it at the nipple on the fuel filter it startd fine.

hope your problem is as simple as mine.

same questions as above also are they the same glow plugs? due to there several different combos had to give correct plug number to get the same ones also r they all glowing one down can cause poor or no starting ,will it start with aerostart ? don't go crazy with it can create more probs with to much of it re check ya plugs

Guys,

I finally found how to adjust the valve clearances and thought i did it properly so tried to roll start the cruiser about 10mins ago.

The thing started but hell did it blow out a ton (ok a s*%t load of) black and appearently sone sort of brown???? smoke........ WTF??????????

Is this bad valve clearance, maybe i set the first cylinder when it wasn't at compression?????

Please help...all the mechanics around here are closing for christmas!

Unfortunatly diesels aren't pull start friendly they will do it but r reluctent about it ,it was probably fuel being pumped in when u were trying to pull start it then it fired and was trying to clear a gut full of unburnt fuel out. Does the truck run n sound ok once its running ? as for the brown yeah wtf ,maybe just go back over the valve settings to make sure on them

brown "smoke" can be rust powder/flakes being blown out of the exhaust manifold and the whole exhaust system if the engine hasn't been run for a long time.

the black smoke is probably as has already been mentioned - does it run ok once it gets going?

the black smoke continues when running and there is a knocking noise fom the engine, makes me think its the valves.

got to do the xmas shopping today so wont have time to play, but i'll let you know what happens when i get the chance.

Thanks for the advise so far!

could be the valves. you couldn't have knocked the timing at all?

did you bleed up to the back of the injectors? air in the system should be white smoke though

i went through the same thing (even forgot about the valves) last christmas

to set the valve clearances when hot or at cold, you need to turn the engine over by hand untill the little mark on the main pulley lines up with the little pin thing that sticks out over the pulley on the top drivers side of the engine, if the front two valves (could be back two, i'll have to check) are looseish, 1 is at compression, if not, you need to turn the engine 1 revolution and line up the marks again before adjusting.

rough running and uncontrollable revs couple with intense brown smoke when the fuel pump is set at maximum, meaning you left a pipe off, or they are on incorrectly.

yes, the vaccum tubes that govern the fuel injector pump... check them too, and in still no joy, outside outside possibility is your injector govening diaphram is bung, but that would be coincidence

Yep that is how i set them, could have stuffed up though and set the 1st cylinder when the 4th was at compression, will have to check.

Are these pipes the two rubber hoses that run from the injector pump to either side of the air intake? I could have just switched the two by mistake cuz it was revving uncontrollably.....
