turbonizing my 80

Hey all
I have saved long and hard, and now have the cash for a turbo.
i have an 95 GXL diesel, 5" lift, 36" simex.
Now i need the power to turn the big rubber, decided on a ATX turbo kit with custom intercooler, 3" exaust and snorkle. i can get it all done at a good price.
But now i am getting cold feet as i am worried about the increased stress and ware on the engine. Its now done 230,000kms, but is stong hasn't ever missed a beat and doesn't blow (much) smoke.
I would like to hear from anyone who has turbo'ed their 1hz. What kind of power do you produce, costs, tuning (who to see), etc...any advice would be awsome. Will i need an oil cooler, will i need to tune the fuel injection system ?
Thought of just changing my Ring & Pinions to 4.56's, but have decided that a turbo will be more effective and enjoyable.
Thanks in advance,
P.S. I am in Melbourne

Hey,
It might be an idea to look at getting a gas/diesel conversion. I'm not an expert on the benefits/weaknesses of the conversion, but I do know the engine runs colder, you get more k's, it costs $3500 over here in WA and you get $500 rebate. It's also got huge power increases just slightly off what a turbo would give. Again i'm not really an expert on the system but just thought it would extend your options. From what the guys told me when I was looking at the conversion I was very impressed, however salesmen will be salesmen we all know that. and yes it's a DIESEL/GAS conversion, and it is available on all diesel engines turboed or not.

Who in Perth does this conversion?

230,000km is just run in for those engines! Being built to take the huge diesel combustion loads, I'd be surprised if the bottom end on the factory TD's is a different spec, but I doubt it.
A turbo won't hurt it. Yes, to get the best results, you would readjust the pump (AXT should do this). An oil cooler can't hurt, as turbos stress the oil more. Definately bolt on an intercooler (decent size), and put a decent exhaust behind it, and she'll be grouse!
B y the way, someone on this forum had their 100 seies done by AXT, and he wasn't happy with the performance result (not installation), until he had the pump tuned by another mob, then he was happy. I don't know of their work, and I'm not trying to put you off or anything, just thought you should know mate......

Yep do it but allow for the following.
Pump recalibration and/or a boost compenstator and a good day on a dyno once you do it! Well worth the expense. Mandrel bend the exhaust!!!
Don't skimp on an intercooler as the cooler the charge air - the healthier the engine will be in the long run.
DO NOT let anyone talk you into more that 13psi boost ! Being indirect injected they don't cope well with more than that!
Also get a Point welded into the exahust to install a pyro meter so you can measure EGT and keep an eye on it!
It's an expensive job overall but remember that reliability costs!

be prepared to do the clutch in about 6 months depends on driver of course n age of clutch and the biggest killer of turbed engines is someones greed on the psi situation dts speced around the 9 psi mark and is quite noticeable

Here is another option...in the 4 sale section is a 1hdt for 4500. It fits straight in and will run rings around your 1hz, which is still worth 3k running in the car!
