Bobbing the back of a GQ

After a couple of bits of damage to the rear of the GQ (yeah EVERY time I go out) im thinking of bobbing the back and getting a tube bar.

How have most people done it - cut well below the crease line and bashed it up into a _| shape with a rubber mallet and then tack welded?

Aus4wd has blanks that fill the holes, perhaps a call to them could see you shipped with a set.
