Making a swing-away wheel carrier

Guys, I plan on making a swing-away wheel carrier and wanted some hints (yeah wayne, I've forgotten all ready).
Will 5mm plate be thick enough for the supporting brackets?
What sort of stub axle to use as the spigot and what to use as the hub?

5mm should be ample for a raider wheel/tyre combo, use a holden stub and get a hub machined to suit out of steel. If you can find a small cast hub (mini wheels to holden stub) you can bolt the carrier to it but welding to the cast is not really an option.
Formula off road used to sell the hubs from memory.

My spare wheel carrier.
75x2.5mm shs.
I had it lying around.
They are easy to fab.

Here goes, attacthed to an ARB bar for GQ Patrol.
Also has shovel and highlift jack storage.
I want to weld some more support into the bar since I am mounting a 33" and will be doing Cape York next year.
Let me know if you need more...

yep I could do that but I want to keep myself amused over the next week and a half in the garage.
You know how it is, christmas, school holidays, kid drives wife insane, wife needs to let off steam, anyone in sight becomes a target.

Cheers grazza and Michael. It gives me a bit of an idea. My carrier will have to be stand alone as the rear bar wont support it.

AFAIK, you have to be able to see the rear lights from an angle of 45 deg. It looks like the spare on HSV rangie would prevent that. Some carriers include lights in the bar to get around this requirement.

The shaft is actually a stub axle, freely available from trailer supply places.
The hubs 'might' be available from Formula Off Road, as they make a mild steel version that can be welded.
Basically they are a bit of solid steel machined internally to the same dimensions as a holden hub to allow trailer bearings to be installed.
you can make abulkier version by using a cast holden front hub but you will have to bolt the tyre carrier to the hub as it is nigh on impossible to weld to the cast .
