hilux handbrake adjustment?

hey guys i just bought an 85 dual cab lux, and the handbrake isnt the best one ive seen. infact it sucks, and i dont trust it on a hill at all.

now i was wondering if someone could tell me how to adjust the handbrake myself. im not exactly sure what needs doing....maybe tightening something?!? any help would be apprecaited as I would like to do this today. cheers everyone

ther r 2 spots u can adjust it from the first is infront of the fuel tank
the second spot is the rear drums them selves u will se a ruber gromit remove it & use a small straIGHT EDGE SCEW DRIVER & ADJUST THE COG up & down

I am having a problem atm with my handbrake that I have been actually working on today.

I bought a new cable and fitted it to no avail. Adjusted in front of the fuel tank and only got left wheel handbrake.

I only just remembered that I didn't adjust the drivers side wheel up fully cause I was in a rush to get the car outta the way when I put the axles back in.

The adjuster is seized on that side so now I have to remove the drum assembly again and do it over.


My suggestion to you. Completely de-adjust in front of the fuel tank. Adjust the shoes up correctly then re-adjust the bracket infront of the tank.

Silicon spray or rp7 fixes that :)

I take the drum off each time i need to adjust it, just a easy. Normally have to adjust/clean the handbrake/drums after a 4wd trip anyway.

Feal sorry for 80 series owners, who have both drum and disk on the rear :P

Always adjust from the drums first, its not hard and takes 10mins a side max. The adjuster near the tank will only affect your freeplay on the hand lever, this adjustment should be made after the drums are adjusted and settled in properly.

Take wheels and drum off, clean any shit inside like brake dust with some water and an old paintbrush. Place the drums back on and press the brake pedal to centre the shoes. Adjust up in small increments until a little amount of resistance is felt. By little amount I mean you should be able to turn the drum freely by hand but it should have enough resistance to gently slow it down. Place drums back on and recentre the shoes, again, by pushing the brake pedal down. Re-check, 99/100 times you will only need to do it once.

Now that you have both sides properly and evenly adjusted its time to adjust the lever behind the tank, you should have about 2inches of travel in your handbrake lever before you can feel the shoes engage the drums. This amount of freeplay ensures the shoes arent dragging on the drums when the lever is all the way in.
