Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys my mate is looking at getting some 31in monoform (read retread) mud terrain tyres for his 4runner. He has around $500 to spend and has been offered a set of 4 new with new rims for that price. Are they worth considering or is there other options for him. He will need rims as well.

I would prefer to steer clear of retreads. A bit bigger than 31's would be nice too. Anyone have any second hand decent offroad tires for that price around Ferntree Gully?

The tires will be purely offroad tyres as well

I run 31" Simex Centipede MT on my Wrangler - I paid $156 each and I'm VERY happy with them!! Note that these are not the same tread pattern as the bigger centipedes, but still very aggressive.

If I was going with Motorway (and I know a few who are very happy with them), I reckon I'd make sure they were remoulds, not retreads. I think some sizes in different tread patterns are retreads, but I could be wrong!

I also have the Simex MT's and find them to bite like hell on most surfaces, very good tyre for the money. Similar tread pattern to Wrangler MTR's

Be aware that the so called 31" monoforms run to about 32.5" real diameter, but have very stiff sidewalls (lots of rubber), but with only the original number of sidewall plies as the donor carcass. Apparently take a lot of weight to get them to bag out.

The monoforms are remoulds (bead to bead).

I thought only the mongrels were retreaded on the sidewalls

My Dad has a set of monoform muddies and only the tread is re-done meaning the sidewalls are original.

monoforms have 1 remolded sidewall mate has a set on his hilux he recon they are damn noisy and he hasnt ever really taken it offroad so cant comment on that
i run 31x10.5 mt recaps just cheapo noname brand cost me $88 per corner (i was poor and needed new tyres for roadworthy) go great offroad and i cant hear them over the fj40 engine exhust wind noise ect ect

have prolly done around 5000kays possibly more and still look 90%

Have to say that most tyre outlets will do a set of 4 31.5's on roh 15X7's for $500

Its a pretty cheap set of tyres & rims really.

Hey there if your mate is interested in some 31's I could sell you my simex mt's for $600. These tyers are still new. I have never driven on them. These are a sweet tyer.

Go the Simex Centipede M/T's! Haven't been stopped yet due to lack of traction... and for only $150 a corner too!

To be sure whether the muddies are a monoform or re-tread, simply go to the Motorway site: www.motorway-tyres.com.au , that'll tell ya once and for all.

They are a good tyre.

I have them on my zook but only done beach work so far and they rock.

The Noise in only just higher than all the zook noises.

I ran the 31" retreads on my old MK with no problems, a little bit noisier, no shakes even though they had a lot of weights on them (tradeoff for retread).
Did lots of highway miles including towing boats & the like. Pretty good in the bush too. They are no mud crawling tyre but for $100 they are great value. Not bad wear either, I had done about 25,000ks when I sold the truck & there was about 3/4 tread left.

Treat them with respect & they will look after you.

At the time I bought mine they only did the 31" in retread, the Monoform started at 33". They do have a website, do a search.

Motorways website say their 31 MT is 781mm diameter... not even 31"

If it was 32.5 i'd definately be considering it

The 31 is 30.8 high as measured from mine on 15x7s.

i used to run the motorway bronco[i think that was the type}on a suzuki. they wore very well and weren't too bad in the mud either.
you have a pm re: tyres.

I ran monoform muddies.... they are remould bead to bead, they are noisy, they don't bag real well, but they are soft so they grip well on rocks and as BFG muddies, are quite good in mud and snow, side walls are tuff as shit, but waer rate is quite high

bear in mine they are 115 fitted inc gst so cheap as.. you don't get the best for cheap prices.

I will not go back to them if i can help it, but they served a perpose.

I met a guy on my travles who is his third set, and has don the cape and the simpson with no blowouts.

For 500 with rims I would say go for it
