4WD Monthly "buying used"

Just been reading the new issue. Article about buying used vehicles refers to transmission (5th gear cluster) failures and noisey rear diffs in early current shape (3rd gen) Pajeros. I've heard about driveline backlash and shattered rear tailshafts but the only trans problems I've heard of (and experienced) were in gen 2 4 cyl cars and the only diff problems I've heard of are the broken axles an enthusiastically driven NHs on this site and the rare(?) broken housings on NH models as well.
Apart from the rear tailshafts and to much plastic I thought the Gen 3s were fairly bullet proof.
Has someone been keeping secrets from me.

Yeah I read that yesterday.
First I've heard of the auto 5th gear problem in the Gen 3 ????
I also haven't heard of the rear diff problems in a Gen 3 but have heard of the diff rubber mounts cacking themselves regularly causing excessive backlash (about $1K fix).
There is the carbon fibre rear propshaft issue as well on the Gen 3's.

Just had my 5 speed auto box repaired one of the drums had flogged out and was letting all the oil pressure drop so no forward motion.
Had reverse only.
It has done less than 70,000kms
Replaced all clutches etc and $2500 it is back on the road again with the sweetest gear changes ever.

K Guys. Did the search on "diff back lash" & this seams to be the most that I am able to find.
What is the way to find out how much back lash you have & "B" how is this adjusted.
I have a Gen 1 2.5 Deisel if that will make a difference. I'm presuming that all will be the same though.
While I'm at it is there somewhere around Sydney West that balances Prop shafts.
Edit: Query posted again
here. Please don't reply to this query in this thread.

Have some first hand experience in manual trans failures - wearing out of the splines on the output shaft where it mates with the xfer case - three reported cases so far. Drivetrain backlash in all the manuals I have driven has been huge. Never heard of an issue with the auto except overheating under adverse conditions.
