Sounds more like the A/C to me. Heater box is located directly over the transmission tunnel in front of the gear lever.
Does you rig have/had A/C

Diddo on what damo said.. the heater box is on top of the tranny tunnel.
oh - and if you want to remove it, allocate some time for it because your whole dash has to come out, along with removing the toob cross member that runs under the dash too (this means you need to mess with your steering column too)... it's a bit of a job.
Oh, and you will need to mess with the water plumbing on the back of the engine - which would be as simple as connecting those two hoses together - but this would also result in the loss of you emergency radiator (heater core) for when the front one is full of mud.

... plus, if you care about keeping your car legal - you need a working heater to run the demister (though you only need that if you have a windscreen on your car)..

If its the heater box you're talking about like greg said you need one for RWC.
If you're not too fussed about that, i took mine out with a hammer and big chisel.
I now have flush mounted CB and UHF in place of the heater controls and the original vents are ideal for mounting of gauges.

I dont really wanna take the heater box out, just the aircon, the one in front of passengers legs, it would make heaps more leg room and i have never used aircon in any car, even fancy cars with nice air con lol , it gives me a headache, so even in 43 degree heat like a few weeks back the window open is good enough for me
