Vacum advance?

Looking for a second opinion. Have been having troubles with running uphill and acceleration. Doesn't seem to matter if hot or cold. As you sink the foot and get above 2000rpm the engine starts to knock and splutter. Checked timing out, is as the book and am running premium at the moment to see if that fixed it but to no avail. Went out for a run just now. Disconnected the vacum advance same syptoms as with it connected so looks like it's stuffed. Any other thought's ie condensor?
Mechanical advance works fine but running it at revs and disconnecting the vacum no change to timing.

Yep the vacuum advance can be the culprit.
That the cap off and suck on the vacuum hose. See if the arm in the dizzy moves.
If you need a new vacuum advance , get a change over one from Performance ignitions in Nunawading. Victoria. About $60 from memory. I think they do a mail order as well. lots of Rover owners have used them and are happy.
A Gen new one is about $480 last time I priced one at a dealer.
I'ts the extreeme heat on a rover engine that cooks the diaphram rubber and it punctures. Performance ignitions replaces there's with tougher rubber they told me. Mine has not given me any problems for 3 years now.

had a prob like that had a hole in the carb diaphram $5 each (changed the two) also had dizzie prob look at carbie frist $10 over new dizzie also look to see if you oil in the carbies (unscrew top pull out dip stick the book will tell you what to do) best of luck

Sorry didn't mention I've got a Holley on board not the originals. Done the tube suck thing and no movement in the vac advance.

Ok the vacum advance has 2 tube connections one pointing away from dizzy one towards. When I suck on the away one no movement. When I suck on the towards one there is movement? Which one is it supposed to be on. Puled it out and only get movement in the towards dizzy direction?

Try it on the one that moves and see if it makes a difference.
On My 96 Disco, There are 2, one has a rubber plug over it, this is the one closest to you viewing engine from front.
The vacuum hose is connected to the other one.
Take your distrib cap off, rotor and plastic,/ bakelite cover plate off, (3 small screws)
Then suck on the hose and see if the lever 'Pulls back' and rotates the base plate.
( I think there are 2 connectiions on the advances as some older vehicles had one form deceleration or something)
PS> Have you tried sucking on the hose at the same time as having the timimg light connected, If the advance is working you will see the timig advance easily when sucking?
Try it on both and see it if advances.

Also block the line after you have sucked on it to make sure the diaphragm is not leaking.
