Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Here is my storey........
I fitted a Tough Dog RTC Stabiliser a few months back on my STD Diesel 80 and it has improved the steering a bit.(The one it replaced was standard & origional back in 94). Before i did it, i had oil weeping from somewhere in the power steering that was not really a problem as I could top it up when it became low. Now the problem I'm having is that the weep has become a torrent (which means I found the weep and can hopefully fix it) and am wondering if the heavier stabliser has caused the power steer to work harder and caused my weep to become a torrent??
Thinking of removing the spring to make it a stabliser if it turns out it has accellerated the problem.
Am I the only one???

I have the tough dog RTC stabiliser on my 94 model
80 series and don't have any problem's, my thoughts
were that the spring aids with steering. Im happy
with mine.

It would appear that the fluid is coming out of the pump from various locations. I Have checked and all the bolts are tight.
Another thought regarding why? Is there different type of fluid?? If there is and I used the incorrect type that is thinner can this be a reason why it is now gushing?
Failing all that and I need a new pump, where and how much??

I beleive you can rebuild the pumps on them?
Someone may be able to confirm this.

If I remember correctly, bazzle has 3-4 dead ones under his bench at home..

NFI.. what brand do u have?

NFI. Mines not leaking.

You are correct. The RTC does put more pressure on the steering. If your steering was not shocking to begin with you do not really need the spring.

I was warned well in advanced about RTC not being good for the power steering pumps. But everyone to there own.

Once the leak is fixed you should be alright but the RTC will certainly shorten the life of your pump.

toyota sells a p/steer pump kit, retail is $59

it contians all the seals & orings in the pump.

it is a common thing for the seals/oring to go, especially if more load is put on the pump, ie: big tyres, dampers etc.

i heard of alot of people snapping the RTC units not many people seem to be using the much anymore alot of people seem to be going to OME stabliser.

I use the pro comp stabiliser which is great. They do not have a pro comp stabiliser for every car though.

I have the RTC on mine and its definatly stiffer than the standard one, as the spring restricts movement ( but at the same time brings her back to centre ), compromise...

with mine im having large problems with steering and have been forced to fit a standard dampener as well as the RTC. this completly resolves problems with steering, but its quite heavy, not as heavy as no powersteer, as u can still confortably turn with one hand.... its just way heavier than the GQ.

if i take the second damper off its much better. so the RTC will be putting more stress on ur pump, and probably helped the seal on its way...

Snapping the spring?
Because when I pulled off the front bash under my lux the other day I noticed my spring on my RTC stabiliser had snapped.
I hadnt even noticed so it just gos to show how much difference that was making .

Yes the RTC damper would put more load on the pump (courtesy of the whopping great spring) but these pumps always leak anyway.
As mentioned go to Toyota spares and get the rebuild kit, not too difficult a job, 'tis a common problem.

P.S, and piss off the Tough Dog sh!t anyway.

Anyway time has beaten me and I'm going away tonight after work so haven't had a chance to check it out further but it's only pouring out when its under load (the wheel is at full lock) so I will be taking more top-up fluid with me.
You all talk the rebuild kit which is prolly the go, and I'll prolly try the RTC dampener without the spring when its fixed and see how it goes.

My 80s pump was leaking and I purchased the Toyota Kit.Approx 2hrs work for the full remove and rebuild.

I got the seal and O ring kit and now need to fit it to the pump. Any advice? Easy job? Fidly job?

It is a fiddly job but not difficult.When you separate the 2 halves just note how it all goes back together.Be careful when putting the vanes back in to the housing,the rounded edge goes to the outside.

Ive got a RTC dampener on my 80 and it also leaks, but as with yours it leaked a little before the dampener went on.

On a previous hilux i had 2 RTC dampeners fitted and even with 35's and 38's, wheel spacers and 10" rims it still drove well. had the dampeners on for prob 2 or 3 years before car got knocked off and never had any steering pump or box probs.

I think if they were gonna pose much of a prob to your steering pump it would have showed with that much more load...

Not that im an expert.
