Hey

does anyone know what a 2.8 would be worth, i dont have one at the moment but a mate of mine and me are thinking of buying a wreck from the auctions non-repairable write of.

just curious if these motors are in demand or we just write it off as a dead loss.. were mainly after the diffs and gearing.

2.8s were never a rocketship, so I would guess that demand for the engine would be very minimal... Most people would convert to a bigger donk if they went to that level...

if you could buy a TD42 for $4k(in forsale section), a 350 chev out of trading post for similar, etc.. or a 2.8 for same, what would you go for?

Have you been to the auctions yet to see what they go for? As I have been thinking about this for about 18mths now. Just never get around to going to them as they are 1.5hrs away. But I would be more interested in getting a 4.2 so I can put it in my shorty instead of rebuilding.

With all the diesel fanatics here I would have thought someone would be desperate to get a cheap diesel into an MQ or GQ petrol.....

That's strange since I regularly see ads for wreckers selling the 4.2 Diesels for $3k.

For $9500 exchange you would have to be be in the market for this nice bridge I can sell you.

4.2 are all the same from 88 to 2004, bar the front timing covers. they are not turboed (ok some are) not electronic, cast heads and are very common. The 2.8 gu is one of a kind motor and there is a change in late 2003 when they run a larger oil gallery, same applies to the Zd30 in both the navara and the patrol. You will get a non electronic pre 95 RD28t for around 1500-3000 depending on Kms. again the earlier motor runs a different alternator setup and are not interchangable with the GU. For the 3K that you state you will get a motor, there is no way possible that you would have that motor in a car running for under 5 grand as a conversion, yes you could do it as an exchange and this is how the motor is often sold.
