As I understand it in the petrol its whatever takes your fancy, in the diesel you need a lighter oil to help combat cold starting problems.

Lets see.... straight from the Holden Workshop manual:-
Engine oil - 6VE1 :
Normal Use - API SG or SH Engine Oil with viscosity of 20W/50
Prolonged use in Snow areas - API SG or SH Engine Oil with viscosity of 15W/40
Manual Transmission:- Same oil as engine or 5W/30 synthetic engine oil or gear oil 75W/85
Transfer Case: Same oil as engine or 5W/30 synthetic engine oil or gear oil 75W/85
Torque-On-Demand:- DEXRON-III Automatic transmission fluid
Front Axle / SOF/ Rear Axle:- API-GL5 85W/140 Gear oil

If you live in a hot place, you have to use 20W 50....15W60...
and if you live in a cold place use a less viscous oil such 10W40...
and always try to use the higher API oil...for example: SH is better than SG...(just follow the alphabetical order to know the best or/and advanced oil)
cheers!!!

20W-50 is recommended but my mechanic has been using BP Visco 3000 15W-50. I dont know why this is but I would have preferred the recommended viscosity.
