Ladders to get to roof of 4WD

Post by grazza »

Just asking if anyone has a solution to getting a small ladder to more easily get to the roofrack on a lifted 4WD. I have a SWB GQ and have seen ladders on some of the import cars, like vans, and was wondering where to source ladders like this.

Or has someone come up with an alternative?

I would like something light if possible.

Any takers?

Or something like a rope ladder, easily folds up for storage ;)

Seriously thoug a decent rear step should be all you need, unless your a midget or something

(I hope i didn't just offend a midget)

There is a step that hangs off the rear tyre for about $70 I think I saw it in the RACV magazine. Folds up and goes in the back when not using it.

I think I will look for a lightweight ladder which I can store on the roofrack which I can hang when needed, when the rear doors are opened and closed. Something like those used with the rooftop tents.

I think I will have a look in the boat shops or look at modifying something from bunnings.

I would like to be able to get onto of the rack for watching 4WD events at places like Landcruiser Park, Qld Raceway, etc - great view!

Maybe even bung a swag on top and sleep on it. Have to worry about falling off, dont think I sleepwalk!

Or get onto the tent mobs to see if they will sell their ladders separately to the tent.

I imagine they would, allowing for loss and people leaving them attached to the car as they drive off........

Just for gain access to the roof rack I just stand on the tyres for accessing side stuff. But if you want to climb up there. You could just stand on the tyre (I have a tyre carrier - so overloading doors not a problem). This is how a gain'd access to the roof rack, when sitting up there for a couple of kays when crossing the Simpson.

You can get a ladder which collapses into like a 50x50mm square by however long my mate has got one thath he stashes under the rack on his rangie

He's in the high country at the mo but will ask him where he sourced it when he's back, if I remember!

That would be great, I am assuming you meant 50cm x 50cm though...

I got one of those import ladders. It came on my Safari but only has a load rating of like 50kg so its been removed. Besides i aint a great fan of putting weight on the back door hinges after reading somewhere here the pins cant be replaced.

Cheers

I want to hang it off the Rhino rack with hooks so I can move it around the car. When not in use I want to stow it on the rack or on the wheel carrier, which has a high-lift jack mounting which I am not using.

Had a look at bunnings yesterday - nothing suitable.

Will check out the wreckers/boat shops/tent places tomorrow.

Found this ladder on an import, looks good to me.
If anyone can help me locate one that would be much appreciated (maybe even a spotters fee - XXXX?)
The dealer wont sell it to me - the bugger.
Maybe I can make one but I cant weld stainless.

Perhaps have something built to order? Xterra owner here in the USA had a shop build this bumper/tire-carrier/ladder for him, VERY nice:

Not sure what it cost, I think it was maybe $800-900 US, but I could be way off.

In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.

Hi Grazza
I tryed the local wreckers link but no replies. However I was down at one this morning and found one from the back door of a LJ78,LWb Bundy.
It is in good nick.It is 30mm taller than the patrol door so you would need to mod it slightly. It clips under the door lip and then you bolt on top clamps to retain it to the top lip.
It is light so I don't know about freight but $20 would buy it.

check the super cheap catalouge in the sunday mail. it looks like they only suit tyres up to 25cm, but they are only $49.00 i reckon you could make some sorta hook for it if you got fatter tyres..... hope this helps.......

Just drink some beers. It will greatly enhance your percieved ability to climb up onto the roof without a ladder no problems. :D
