Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey, i need to dump my car somewhere to get it professionally looked at as there is a problem with the ignition side of it (i think). it regards to major water problems to try and diagnose a problem.

something cant be right if i am driving into a river and the car stalls, even when the dizzy or coil arent wet. and the fan wasnt even touching the water!

also noticed as i filled up the overflow bottle for the radiator, the car started to cough and revs were going up and down, i doubt this is normal.

any recomendations?

or anyone know something i can try?

it shouldnt be acting like this, its something to do with water, but even little puddles on bitumen roads sometimes it hates it too.

ps. this is a GQ TB42 with carby on gas if it means anything

check the points?

For pure mechanical stuff and fault finding Guest 4wd in Fairfield is very good, Dave Guest is the guy to talk to there.

well i actually did some work on my 4by for a change

i pulled apart the dizzy and siliconed the shit out of everywhere that could possibly be a problem, just need to let it set to test it out. hopefully it works.

i did this before and it worked for a while, but then the problem came back, so i thought time to reapply. so i guess i will see what happens.

might test it with a bucket of water when it dries rather than a deep bog hole lol

Ive run a petrol with stacks of water coming thru engine bay (AS I was washed down the Wongungara in flood- another story)

Engine kept running right up to when an hour later driving up Collingwood spur it stopped. Dizzy full of water but only stopped due to angle allowing water onto rotor.
Standard cap seals real well. Rubber breather on top need to be run to aircleaner, hole at bottom rear of dissy need filling with silicone and a hose run back to firewall with a small petrol filter on it.
Dist filled with water due to filter being under level.
Snorkel fitted to air intake too.

Good quality spark plug leads will seal at coil, plugs and Dissy cap (I used Jacobs)

You dont need silicone everywhere else it just attracts dust etc.

Keep it all clean by wiping with a CRC sprayed rags from time to time. If points fitted replace with Piranha etc.

If your engine revs change when you filled your overflow bottle (which shouldnt need doing??) it sounds like a problem with a head gasket etc.

I bet your engine bay is Spotless NOT!

well when i first got the car is would go through deep water and might chug for a little but then it would fix itself soon enough. as time goes on the problem is worsening.

how much is a new set of leads approx?

while i was silioned up the dizzy last night, i cleaned everything thoroughly so it is all spotless now, except red goop everywhere.

i had to top up my overflow as on the weekend my car was running a little hot on a long hill climb in the sun, and coolant was coming out of the overflow run off, so i just topped it up a little.

i do clean my engine bay after every trip nearly, but its not spotless, and whenever i do, i have trouble starting it afterwards, even though i try not to squirt the dizzy with the hose.

Setup a blind, I have a roll of pallet wrap. works really well.

we used a $5 bluey tarp from Supercheap on longweekend up high country on a pathfinder to cross a few, worked a treat, it kept going, and the chick driving was more confident after the weekend, so all was a positive...

The good thing with the pallet wrap is that it clings like gladwrap, is 10 times stronger and can be disposed of when your done (don't have to pack a wet tarp back in the vehicle)
