Auto or R151 manual behind V8

Wondering what are peoples thoughts on choosing between- R series manual gearbox or use the A34# auto (that's in Crown half cut) to go behind Toyota V8.

I don't know much about auto's except they shift soggy after a while, need expensive services, sap power and fuel. The auto in question is also larger than manual box (trickier conversion?), and has all the electronics.

However I'm pretty sure the auto would be cheaper for conversion- are there other benefits?

Auto's are softer on drivelines.
Autos allow easier crawling as you don't stall, you cease forward motion till you apply more power.
Auto's allow for non spin hill starts etc with possible better wheel control.

Its a definate no contest - R series by a country mile.

For starters with the auto you will have to get a Surf auto and then have its shorter output shaft installed in the Crown auto, which obviously raises the question, why not just use the Surf auto. But both require various sensors and an ECU to operate.

"Black" boxes are available to turn them into manual shifters but believe me at the end of the day its just not worth the trouble and cost as a manual is better, easier and cheaper.

Their torque convertors are also WAY too small for 4wd use.

I've been there but now use a R154 and its chalk and cheese.

Thanks J Top and JD. JD confirmed my suspicions- the auto prolly wouldn't be any cheaper even in short term, so manual it is.

Funny though a few of the buggy guys like these auto's- but then again buggys are a lot lighter than full truck.

I've been tossing up whether to go manual or auto with this V8 aswell...

Manual it will be, so much more fun...
Dellow now make the bell housing adaptor that i need for this conversion, and i will hopefully be speaking to them with a couple of weeks again.

There is a far amount of work fitting the auto, but manual is the way to go...

Hill Climbs and crawling = Cluth and throttle control...

LOL in certain cars autos are shitloads quicker!

If you lived in the city, manuals are a pain!

Autos are heaps more relaxing to drive!

LOL.. Depends on how much time you spend in the vehicle.

All my Diesel 4wds have been manual, but my sedans are all auto!

For a long highway cruise the auto with cruise control shits on the manual & I get no fines!

Yeah but if you can 'jam' (technical term) your thong up against the kick panel and on the GO pedal than you have the 'bush' cruise control right at the tips of your toes! :D

And unlike that crappy auto cruise control, it won't turn off if you touch the brakes... :D
