is 5" dropped hanger just too much for a hilux

me and the old man are in the middle of building a garage and we are using 120 x 75 x 5mm steel for the bearers and pearlings, and its just been staring me in the face for days, every time i see it, i just think mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 5inches of sweet sweet lift

is it feasible or not??

5 inch drop on front mount only would throw out your wheel alignment by a lot.
Your castor angle would be all fawked up.
Not to mention it would look really redneck and be illegal.

mmmm ah well, so what about that jeep in 4wd monthly a few years back that had what looked to be at least a 6" drop, or all those yankee rigs with the same thing, the way i saw it would be use to the hangers for lift and then really flat springs for articulation......made sense i thought

It will be fine you may even want to concider stacking the RHS on top of itself and going for a 10" or even a 15" dropped hanger then you could fit the spring upside down and it might not be too tall then.

Sure as hell is.

Unless you don't need to go over 5kms per hour. Bushes would flex all over the place.

Of course im serious. Think of all the flex this set up would give you. You would have heaps of down travel because you fitted the springs upside down first and then up travel would be fine because your 15" dropped hangers would flex like mad

This would be a sic set up. Im gunna go try this soon

He is dropping the hangers 5" not extending the Shackle 5". So the bushes wont know anything dfferent.

Oops, misread.

Shouldn't be a drama, in that case. Just get friendly with your engineer for road use.

As long as you drop the hangers on both ends castor and pinion angles shouldn't get too wierd. :D

Watch out weakening the springs for more flex as they will wrap.

Plus wouldn't 5" dropped hangers only give you about 2.5 inches lift...?

You would then get slightly extended shackles to add a little more height and also help flex.

In doing so (quick question) to save unis and driveline stress you could have the spring mounts on the diff rotated a little to straighten it back up...
But, does this affect braking much, as calipers sit in the spot they do for their best braking ability, rotating by too much would be bad...

you really reckon this could work tony??

or are you just bein silly, cause i dont really see that much wrong,

would you put anything under shackle mounts to correct all angles??? instead of 5" ext shackles, cause that would be silly

luurrvvveeee the picture by the way

cause i wanted to see what other people thought first, i mean i know its a bit silly as you could achieve lift in other ways, but i've seen it done before, i've got a few metres of this stuff left over at my disposal, and it just looks all too tempting, im a sucker for temptation :D :D

i guess i just wanted to see what else had to be done to make it all work, i know for a fact guys have done this, as you can see theres photos to prove it, but what i wanna know is what else did they do???

Ok you realy dont want to go with a 5" dropped hanger. Firstly it will fawk with your caster and you wont be able to steer it. Secondly where you are mounting the crossmember its only basicaly a piece of 75mm RHS across the front. So by the time you add another 5" of 75RHS under this there is going to be some huge leaverage on this Crossmember. And you cant brace it back to the chassie because the steering box and linkages are in the way.

I wouldnt use anymore than a 50MM dropped hanger. With this set up and reasonably flat springs you can retain close to stock caster and still get good flex.

If you are looking for height to run bigger tyres dont. Cut the firewall out and run less lift.

what set-up did you have on your old white dual cab???

it always looked fairly low, esp considering the size of those claws you had

It was tall Way tall. Like 5-6" of lift. When i rebuilt it into my Green Hilux i lost the lifted springs and went with almost flat ones.

It basicaly ended up with a 2 Inch Dropped hanger which also moved the front of the spring 2" forward. Stock shackles and a set of stock Jeep Waggoneer Springs which sat almost flat. Which ended up giving me maybe 2,2.5" of lift. I then had a 60mm Body lift and the firewall was Tubbed about 4".

Ran 38/12.5/15 TSLs and they never hit the firewall. These were on 75series offset rims.

The Dual cab had the same dropped hanger, A set of 2" extended shackles and a set of rear springs that gave about 3" of lift on top of the hanger and Shackle. I also had the 60mm body lift.

Was running the 38.5 Claws and they were all over the firewall at full compresion. But these were also on huge offset rims.
