What 4x4 would u modify, suzi or cruiser

Hi

Got a bit of a question. I have a 1991 soft top sierra with a body lift and mud terrains that I have had a heap of fun in. I also have a 1981 FJ45 landcruiser ute that I have been slowly rebuilding. It has a 302 windsor v8. I havent done much work on the cruiser for a long time. Body is a bit rust, but not too bad. The whole car needs lots of work.

I want to turn one of them into a serious off road vehicle. What do you reckon I do. Leave the suzi as a car to have a bit of fun in on the weekend. Or work on the suzi coz it already goes.

If I was going to do the cruiser. Give me some ideas of mods to do to it. Suspension, body etc.

Thanks

Jason

What he said, then do some of what I have done.

SOA, 5 speed, power steer/air, 37's then you should be right.

Already got a Patrol

Already got a Nice GQ Patrol for touring and a ute for carrying my motox bikes. I reckon I will just do up the suzi and leave the cruiser for one day when I have more time.

the zook can be done up very cheaply :)

If it is for play only that makes it easier again

definatley cruiser 40 series...which I have already done....very easy to work on....being 6`5 tall and 135 kg I wouldnt fit in a zook anyway....lol
though I wouldnt think a zook would be that hard to modify and work on as well...Have seen a couple of nice ones get around too..

The 45 for sure.... SOA, 37's, front and rear lockers, cut down tray, deep rims, crawlers...you'll out drive a swb zook any day of the week.

considering you live in darwin and theres no real rules up there :D

zook with all the cruiser gear, 302 V8, cruiser diffs, spoa, 37's, twin lockers....mate it'd be un-stoppable

The wheelbase isnt long enough to be "hardcore" look at most of the good zooks all long wheel base....shorten the cruiser up if you think its to long.

Crikey!!! Wish i had half the vehicles you got!!! Realistically what you should do it do up the suzuki and donate the 40 series to me as a parts car!!!
If you do up the cruiser do a springover and fit LAV tyres. Loose the roof and back window, cut the doors down and fit a rollcage with canvas top. Fit a PTO winch and head for the floodplains!!!

a bit off the topic, but you all know what i'll be voting for.... ZOOK.

there's a camo coloured dual cab hilux up here that got seriously defected for running the asLAV tyres. it has a fair bit of lift, SOA, and front shackle reversal running rancho's all round. Number plate reads -HOGWLD-
he now has some 16" 7.50s on there, looks hella funny.

although, a 45 V8 would be a ripper up here. theres already a couple of shorty 45s with V8 smoking 33"+ 35" tyres.

I have seen that hilux as well. Wonder if he actually drives it off road or just cruises town with it. It looks pretty awesome. Have you seen that white single cab hilulx with 37" MTR's outside Ducks Nuts?

That looks like another town 4x4 as well, but I could be wrong.

If he was to be puting the 302 and cruiser diffs in the sierra he might as well lengthen the wheel base alot!! stock they could be a bit longer but if your gonna do that sorta stuff you can just as easily lengthen your wheelbase. other then that i personally dont think the 302 in the sierra would be a good idea. too much bloody weight and thats a zooks main advantage. you'd be better of going a lux engine or somehting like that. not to mention trying to fit the bugger in there. if someone wants to argue that it would be too hard or against the law to extend the wheel base just bye a long wheel base chassis? would cost you about a third of the cost of the 37" tyres if that. lol

Go the ZOOK!!!!! Cruisers are Grimace!!!

Not having a go at you at all Tosh but this makes a good point.

Jasonmcc when you ask a question like this you get 2 types of answers. Those who weigh up the pros and cons of each option and make a justifiable decision and those who say whichever option because of blind unjustified brand loyalty, or because that's what their old man had etc.

You clearly don't have a particular brand affiliation :)

I said zook based on
* budget (2nd car so less $ is better)
* ease to work on (can lift most parts by hand alone and use about 4 tools to dismantle a whole car)
* parts availability and low comparative cost
* Ability to tow it to spots with your patrol if that ever becomes necessary

I own a zook for many of these reasons (poor ass student ). However had hilux been an option I would probably say that over a zook ;)

Zooks can be unreal 4x4's but to do that most people swap most of there gear with toy stuff anyway....i still vote for the 45

Its just that the last line where you said that so obviously as a joke made me think about it that's all :? Don't be so defensive :)

yeah Jason, the HOGWLD hilux dude is a hard core pigger/hunter, apparently. he goes out a fair bit for pigs and stuff.

and with the other hiluxs, with 37"s, i think there are about 4 of them now, and one went back to 35"s cos he couldn't turn the 37"s. i think theres one hilux getting built, not sure, just rumour ATM, supposed to have a Chev V8 and 37"s too, and its a dual cab. the hiluxs on 37"s that have custom trays are guys from We're-a-bout engineering. i think.

have you got your Sierra running yet? or is this what your still trying to decide?

last time i saw the red hilux from whereabout it had 38's on. Probably your best option is to keep the suzi and use it to drive around in and have fun in while you build up the toyota. Because it will take awhile to get the toyota built. At least that way you can still go 4wding. Whatever you choose to do will be dictated on whether or not you need to drive it on the roads or purely off road. There are a few toyota's running LAV tyres but they only drive off road and are not registered.
