some questions about mq/mk patrol utes

Im thinking about swapping my mk/mq short wheel base patrol for a ute in the same model and just wanted to ask some quick questions about mk/mq nissan patrol utes.
What size motors do they have standard?
did many of them come out with 5 speed gear boxes?
do they have the same gear ratios in them as the short wheel base mk/mq patrols?
is their any other important things i should know about mk/mq utes

The MQ / MK utes have the same motors standard as the SWBs and LWBs.
They however are MORE COMMON to be diesel ( SD33 ).
The MK utes were common with a 5 speed. The MQ utes were not.
The gear ratios are the same for the ute as SWB, unless u have the really big diff in the back, with which case u may have 4.8 to 1 rather than the standard 4.6 to one ( almost no difference at all ).
the 5 speed models have lower gearing than the 4 speed so if u get a 5 speed MK ute will have lower gearing.
MK utes were SD33 turbo often enough, the natually asperated ones were in the older MQs.
If you were to get one, u would get a MK ute 85,86 or 87 model, so as u have a good chance of getting p/s , a/c, and 5 speed etc.
wat else would u like to know?

did any of the utes come out with the L28 motor in them? if not what size are the petrol engines i would preferable like to stick to petrol because i know how it works and its easy to fix. would you say the five speed box would give you better fuel economy than the four speed in a mk shortie

5 speed would be better on fuel economy at cruise, though worse through the gears in traffic as its lower geared and ull go through them quicker....
u have a problem.
There are 2 diesel motors and 2 petrol motors in the MQ / MK series.
The SD33, SD33 T, L28 and P40.
the P40 is nearly none existant, expecially in the later models....
the only other petrol is the L28.
this is where the problem lies.
The L28 was almost non existant with the 5 speed gearbox. L28s were 95% 4 speed. most of the ones that u would ever see around, if u look under the transfercase, the mounts would have been moved back and a 5 speed fitted later.
L28 5 speeds were around but even less common from factory than the P40 motor was in MKs.....
I am honestly unsure whether the Utes came out with the L28, but IF THEY DID, it would only be 4 speed, unless custom modded.
But my gut feeling tells me that most utes were diesel as well.

the P40 is a bit of a dinosaur of an engine and no body makes a snorkel for the P40 but i reckon it would be a close fit to an SD33. snorkel. but its not hard to make your own if you want 1 either, my SWB L28 is quite a good little motor it's no drag racer but it does everything needed. It is hard to see but check where the middle cross member is welded onto the chassis under the flywheel to make sure you can't see any severe rust in the chassis as they can rust out there as it tends to hold crap in it.

Hi Beast Tamer
I've got a late 1985 MK Ute that I am thinking of selling in the next few weeks. It has the SD33 Diesel, 5 speed manual, air conditioning and power steering. It also has a huge alloy tray with heavy duty carry racks that you could put a house on (not sure how the little SD33 would handle that though).
It is white, has 15x7 Sunraysias with good tyres (all terrain style), has an alloy bullbar, rear towbar, extractors and sits nicely on good springs. It recently had a new radiator (cost $550) and has just run out of rego. It is not a rust bucket like some examples of the breed.
If you are interested, please email me.
Cheers

But Screwy if he's lookin for an L28 wouldn't a ute shell fit onto the LWB, so that he'd have all the ute things with the L28???
Don't know if this would work but just a thought, or even turn the LWB into a Twin Cab?
Mere.

yeh but he has a shorty, and is wanting to sell and buy to replace.
im not sure hes talking about doing body swaps and custom trays and engineering it all as a different shell and weeks of work......

What i discovered when i was looking for an MK patrol, utes are RARE. When they do come up, they fetch 2k more than a shortie, at minimum.
Arent the early GQ utes basically just an MQ with a td42?

What exactly differentiates the MK from the MQ? Did they overlap year-wise?

It's not weeks of work. Slice the cab at the factory joins around the windscreen post, and across the floor towards the rear of the front doors, and do the same to a Single Cab body, then join it all back together. With 2 people can have it all done in a day no problems. If your not to concerned about the finished paint quality, you can do the cab Saturday, tray Sunday, into the engineers first thing Monday morning.
But of course thats only if you have the motovation to it all in a weekend. Doing the cut and shut on the cab is the way i will be doing it to my MQ Shortie, after helping doing it this way to a Pathfinder and Daihatsu Delta Van, saves a lot of hassle of pulling things apart. OK i admit i do enjoy using a grinder cutting vehicles in half

JustinM,
ur right about about MK utes being rare and worth more, and ur close with early GQ utes.
Early GQ utes are complete running gear and chassis ( box diffs and motor ) of a GQ, the interior is also GQ.
The external body however is MQ/MK. It is leaf sprung and had MQ steering however, but has GQ steering box
Its half, Half. I call it the transition stage
MQ finished mid-83' and MK started from then and went till late 87'
only difference is the square headlights and MKs have got the nice bits like p/s and a/c ALOT MORE COMMON
also MQs never came with 5 speed, only MK, though it all bolts up the same to both models.....

What is the bed height and seat height on an mk ute (87 lights are round here) and what is the mas speed on the sd 33 on the ute? Was wondering how far springs sagged, ( also need body mounts)
