Does anyone know of an easy fix or coversion for the 80 series steering box..???


I am on my 5th one now.. I keep twisting the shafts in them..

It is really starting to piss me off

smaller tyres ?

dont think you will be able to strengthewn them

may need to consider some sort of hydro assist, or full hydro.

Hydro would be cool.

Avoid the ruts? Try being nice to it?

Overall the box's are reliable - maybe look into a GU box conversion?

I think if you have doen 5 though - I'd examine your driving style, and what exactly you hit each time that did the damage - then avoid doing that again - I think learning is cheaper than steering box's.

I have been VERY nice to these last few box's... I did learn from the first two..

The last time I twisted It was I was just playing around testing my articulation... didnt hit anything just tried to hold the wheel straight so that i didnt fall off the bank.. reversed off and it was twisted.....

Only twice I have hit something hard to twist it.. the rest of the times it was pathetic....

That sux man - maybe have a chat and look into the GU option - O know they are NOT cheap but teh cost may mean reliability!

I only changed my first box over 5000 k ago - after 295K and running large tyres. whata PITA for you though - have the box's been new or reco'd?

The last one was a genuine brand new box..

Looks like the GU box might be the way to go... is the GQ box any weaker than the GU?

Yes - smaller everything.

I have done a radius arm flip, and put hi steer on my 80
and im running 36" swampers no problems, as the hi steer
keeps it running parrallel & not at stupid angle.

I have 7" and 36's...... u reckon it will help me?

I whacked in a very late model GQ box into my shorty GQ and the difference in size alone is astounding. They seem to be just as big and strong as the similar GU units so if you can find a wrecked 96 or so GQ don't be afraid to go this route...

I give it a hammering and it takes it....

Even if you dont go for the arm flip, which you should to correct
the castor, Hi steer will definitly help.

This is the major reason you are twisting the Sector shaft.

Once you lift a 80series or anything with factory cross over steering the steering link goes from running across the car parralel to the axle to running down hill big time. So when you hit a Bump insted of the arm just rotating up and down it gets pushed up and down which puts a heap of stress on the steering box.

Goung with a High steer arm will help fix this problem. Look at most hilux,s with Cross over steering. The steering link is usually fairly parralel to the axle when looking from the front. Hilux boxes have the same diameter sector shaft as far as im aware and these rarely twist.

Dude, Only once and it was while fighting the wheel whilst being dragged up a rut with a rolled front tyre 5 times is mad! Fix it!

Spoke to John, sounds like this will go a long way to fixing your woes. Did mention you'll need to raise the Panhard Rods 3" or so and that the bar may occasionally hit the chassis on compression where both springs bottom at the same time, but no issues through the articulation.
At four inches the Angle my arm sits on will not be as bad as yours so I may be able to live with it for now, then again I may go another inch or two later.

The 4th was in the accident i had and the last one is just a freak of nature I thinks....

anyway I'm definatly goin to do this now..

I will ring j mac and get a price on the highsteer arm and go from there I guess
