TD42 making strange noise

The TD42 in my GQ with 250000km on the clock was starting to make strange noises on my drive home to Sydney after a 1600 km offroad trip in the Vic Alps. Comming downhill into Cooma, I heard a loud clicking or rattling noise from the engine. I pulled over instantly and tried to find the source of the noise. It sounded valve related to me, but the mechanic at the workshop nearby thougth one of the pistons might be on the way out and strongly advised me not to start the engine again and continue my trip.

I checked the oil level every day on the trip and the engine didn't show any oil consumption. The oil warning light also didn't come on at any time.
There was no prior indicarion of a problem up until I rolled into Cooma.

The NRMA paid for a 400km tow to my workshop in Sydney.

I had a chat with the tow truck driver who told me that he had a similar issue with his TD42 at 250000 km as well and it turned out to be a valve seat which came loose. This made sense to me.

Now here is the interesting part:
Thew guys at the workshop started the engine and it just runs fine; they can't reproduce the noise although it happened on a normal road trip. The workshop manager is reluctant to pull the engine apart because he thinks I could end up spending up to 2 k$ without knowing if the problem is fixed.
I'm worried going off road with a known engine problem which could ground me in the middle of nowhere.

Has anyone ever come across a similar problem with a TD42?
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Joachim
