Second hand turbo kit Qs.

I have the oportunity to purchase a used turbo kit for my Hilux off a mate for $450.
It has a Garrett turbo and is labled ATI across the air intake pipes, anyone heard of them?
It was fitted to a 2.4 that blew up (not sure on details) and he has replaced the motor with a 3litre.

The turbo doesnt feel like it has any slop in it but it feels like it has a bit of drag and doesnt spin really easilly. It turns ok but just has a little resistance.
Is this major? or is it something as simple as needing a good clean out or what?

I will be taking the turbo into a turbo place to have a look at it tomorow but I just thought I would see what people say here.

Sure it's not AIT across the top? I have a vague recollection of Advanced Induction Technologies (or some such shite...)

I'd be wary of a second-hand turbo. Drag on the turbine is probably seals - if you notice it it's probably not good, given that these things are supposed to spin at tens of thousands of rpm.

The other potential problem is turbine balance. Spinning at ultra high speed any minute piece of grit can pit the surface of a blade on the inlet side. Happen regularly and the turbine can become unbalanced, enough to accelerate wear on bearings (and make more whine - which is the cool sound we like to hear! :D )

But a decent turbo place should be able to give you a decent appraisal.

Good luck,

Scott

shouldn't have any resistance ... turbos are pretty precise in how they work ... i'd say get it over hauled

Older style turbos do not have proper roller bearings and the like that newer styles now have- they rely on a layer of force fed oil between metal to allow the impellor assy to rotate easily. Therefore, out of the vehicle with no oil feed, it will not free spin. End play wear is something to check out (thrust bearing wear), but the fact it will not spin easily shouldnt be a big concern.

Get it checked out, but from what you've said it sounds fairly normal to me. ;)
