CLEARANCE

Could you guys please post your ground clearance between the lowest point of your diff/axle casing (lets all work off the rear diff to be consistant) and the ground (flat).
State what diff casing you have (I assume most would be rover, but flat bottom type or not) also state your tyre size as well (brand too as sizes vary between make).
Thank you

31.4cm from bottom of the pumpkin to the ground
36x13.5x15 IROKs (36.8x14.5x15) bias
Rover 1992 "flat" housing
Status was 26psi after 2 hour drive (the tires were round and not D-shaped like a standing bias would be)...
I can give you some forecast figures for my 42s

Ii assume Das that you are only interested in ground clearance measurements on vehicles without portal axles ?

21cm
31x10.5x15 BFG AT
Round diff
Surely clearance is a function of tyre size.
So if I put 35s on my vehicle, I gain 4 inches, which equates to 2 inches extra clearance.

No Harry, you only gain the extra distance from the axle centre line to the ground so going from 31 to 35 inch tyres will only give you 2 inches more not 4 .
Its warmed up a bit outside, so I had a quick measure on concrete with 25psi on Q78 Swampers with flat bottom diff. The dimension is 15 3/4'' Bill

That's what I said in my post, 2 inches extra clearance.
Anyway, I'm feeling a little inadequate
I only have 21cm (8.25 inches).
John's 33s give him 25.5cm. That's 4.5cm more than my 31s.
These flat bottom diffs seem to give an
extra 2cm (2 inch [5cm] tyre difference equates to 1 inch [2.5cm] height difference yet he has 4.5 cm more clearance! Rough claculations)
mmmmm
What model Rangies are these flat bottom diffs fitted to?
I'd love another 3/4 inch

The flat bottom housings were fitted to all Rangies from 1982 onwards. I have seen 81's with both the old style and the flat bottom, so it could be late 81 I'm not sure.
Both forward facing shock mounts at the rear were introduced on the 'Phase 2' Rangies in 84.

I beleive the P38a has what you might call flat bottom diffs.
With current 265/75's, mine has 245mm.
In bog stock trim, I calculate the P38a would have around 211mm* - based on current tyre size/brand. (Cooper ST)
I read somewhere a stock Disco II has 208mm* and the Defender Extreme has 215mm but I can only assume these measurements are from the diffs.
* The Disco II and P38a supposedly have shared axles but I don't understand this as diff centres are offset to differant sides of vehicle. Why do they have the same stud pattern?

Apologies Harry, a bit groggy this morning and I missed that part.
Regards Bill]
I have both round and flat bottomed axle housings in my truck and the only thing that reduced clearance on the round bottom one is the drain plug. the flat bottom housing is actually no higher. By screwing the drain plug in from the inside with the diff removed and grinding the steel plug protecter ring off the bottom of the axle housing, the round bottom housings have the same clearance as the flat bottoms. for a drain plug I removed one of the bottom diff flange splined studs, drilled and tapped a 7/16'' unf thread in the hole and screw a bolt in.

What a great tip Bill.
Will be performing that modification the next time the diff is apart.

250mm, flat bottom diffs with 265/75R16 Dunlop MT2's.
I think the Dunnies are a bit larger than the sidewall indicates, compared with some of your measurements.

237mm on BFG A/T's 265x75x16 at 40psi, front and rear diffs, both flat bottom.
BFG's are REALLY low on tread too.
I'll give measurements of the 35x10.5x16 Simex ET's on Thursday!
Loanrangie, I had a full set of 5 Dunlop Grandtrek MT2's b4 the Simex, but i staked 2 of them, now i've got 3 at 50% and can't find any 2nd hand ones.
They're quite good though, when new they worked very well.
I was coming from 29" road tyres though.

Loanrangie, I've found the MT2s pretty good too, in my experience. They haven't let me down at all yet and seem very good at cleaning real sticky mud out. They're quite good on road too, haven't had me going straight-on in the wet corners yet!

, But didn't inspire confidence on loose gravel roads (was doin fishies, maybe my fault?)
And they're even better when they're cheap (or free).Tread looks like a Wrangler MT knock off tho.
