My 82 swb mq smokes a little after idling for a while. Just a puff on take off. What is a common prob on these motors, rings or valve seals? How tough to fix?

Could be either but i'm guessing valve seals because mine had the same prob. A compression test will let u know.
It's tricky but the seals can be replaced with the head still on the motor (using the old rope in cylinder trick to keep the valves up) and they're shit-cheap

Maybe your valve stem seals, depends if you want to look at them in car or not, mine started like that and got worse, six months later I took the motor out and sussed everything out, the seals were average, the head gasket goes between the water gallery at the rear of engine and number six pot (got head welded because of corosion) and the oil rings were gunk't up from previous owners. :x good luck
