Posted this in Auto Electrical but being a Fez I thought it might have been a problem someone else had here......

Just wondering if anyone can explain why my brake and charge dash lights flicker on and off only occasionaly when i use my blinkers. It doesn't happen any other time until the blinkers are used. The Alternator is new and working fine.

It's only happening occasionally too. Maybe a few times every couple off days. I spoke to an auto elec. but he doesnt know and of course it wont happen while it's in his workshop.

Sounds like the sort of problem that is caused by a bad earth somewhere. Check all the earths associated with your indicators and the flasher unit under the dash.

Thanx Dave....but what do i look for when checking the earth wires???

I know they are the green ones but should they all be connected to the same place?

Earths may not be green; but they will be bolted onto the metal chassis of the car somewhere. Start with the indicators themselves (more likely to have a high resistance earth due to water/ mud etc) and use a multimeter to check the earth resistance of the bulb holder to the chassis.

They should all be as close to zero Ohms as possible- for anything more than a couple of Ohms trace the earth wire back and try to work out where the bad connection is. Make sure you get a good contact on the chassis with the probe when measuring or you'll get false readings. Bolt heads and the like are good places to use as an earth reference.

The problem could also be in a loom plug somewhere and not an actual earthing point on the chassis.
