I rang up today to price changing my 4.88's to 4.11's and they want $400 each end ($800) to swap and that is without new bearings

Changing the crownwheel is simple as it is just a few bolts. You will need a bearing puller for the pinion which MAY stuff your bearings (that is why they always quote new bearings). When removing your diff centre from the housing mark one side of the carrier bearings and bracket so they go back on in the exact position they were removed (I used a scribe and a single line for one side and 2 lines for the other)

You can get away with standard tools but will need a bearing puller.

Were it gets tricky is setting up your pinion backlash (I think this is what it is) as they use dial guages etc to get perfect. This is the main reason people use a transmission specialist.

Regards
David
