Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey crew,

I'm looking at getting a extracab ute in the future, some things i would like to know are your experiences with them and any info on fuel consumption/power/torque or any problems with particular models that stand out(ie bad diff etc)

looking for a lighter vehicle, like a hilux. Dont wanta landcruiser type ute, too heavy and too much fuel

I am in the same situation at the moment.

I personally favour the Rodeo, as they are already turbo-charged diesel & don't command rediculous prices for second hand vehicles. The down side is that there arn't as many after maket parts available for them.

Yesterday I looked at 2 rodeo's.
1. 98, TD, ali tray, ali bullbar, 78Km's, LX (cloth trim) $19k
2. 97, TD, styleside, canopy, steel bullar, winch, alloy wheels, UHF, LX $18

The rodeos are much better for touring & soft off-roading. (beach driving, outback touring) IMHO.

If you are after a rock-hopping/extreme beast, then look no further than a '97 or older solid front axle (ie not SR5 model) Hilux. RocToy was an absolute beast of a Hilux in the For Sale section here.

im not really looking for an extreme rock car, i mainly want it for hunting purposes, so most of it will be sand tracks/paddocks

definately favouring a diesel over petrol, would def want a turbo in that instance.

i'm in no hurry to find anything, i just want to research as much as possible before so i can make an educated decision

id go with the hilux, and plans always change after you get one, so why be stuck with a hunk if junk with no after market bits avail.

Nissan stopped making the extra cab 4x4 ute quite some time ago, & everyone I have ever seen has always been a petrol.

I also want to use it for shooting, & if that is the case the 97+ hilux are great. They have dual glove boxes in front of the passenger & the top one is built into dash & when open is perfect for spare mags or ammo boxes.

I still personally prefer the rodeo, as I dont require many aftermarket accessories & the ones I want are available for the rodeo, plus they have the power & price advantage. (rodeo 74kw, hilux 65kw).

ok, however on thinking about it a dual cab might be a goer as well, since having the rear seats will still allow me to have internal room to store firearms camping gear etc(more secure as well) and also be able to take other ppl/kids out

however if i go this option i want a dual cab that is a tray back

ahhh decisions decisions decisions......

as far as fuel consumption goes does the dual cab go through more or less fuel as the extracab?

Couldn't see the different cab styles having different fuel consumptions.
