The 4.8 petrol Patrol was never released with a dipstick for the auto transmission, only a blank off cover.
Nissan tell me that all dealers were issued with 1 dipstick for service reasons. I am not sure how the owners check their auto oil.
I used the scenario, "a patrol has busted a cooler line down the road so we got it to the workshop, repaired the hose but how do I know how much auto oil to top it up with". As I said they have done some silly things.
And the best part is you can't buy a dipstick from Nissan parts.
Now thats what I call intelligent manufacturing. LMAO as well.

yea I find it hard to believe.. Surely you wouldnt buy one if you could never check the fluid!!! as the example says what happens if you shag a oil line 2000klms from a dealer, patch it up, you fill with what you think is right, blow it up, and then what?

Unfortunately a true story.

My 4.8 Auto is just about to go in for it's 40K service and I will ask if
there is a dipstick available.

I guess they must have some dipsticks - the guy who came up with this idea for one :-)

I have had other automatic cars with sealed auto transmissions as well - so it's not just Nissan.

Perhaps someone like Rodney from Wholesale Automatics can shed some light on this concept.

Falcons & Jackaroos have had them for years & they are not sealed, they just have a fill plug located on the side of the transmission.
You fill them up just like a diff or manual gearbox.

The only silly thing about them is with the Fords the put the fill plug about 2'' away from the exhaust & you burn your hand when you check the level (typical s##tbox Ford, do things the hard way).

Prevents people from ovefilling the transmission because a lot of people dont knoe how to check an Auto transmission properly.

Hi It's Rodney here. Yes it's True that Nissan don't have a part number and the spare parts department have no listing for dip stick on the Nissan GU 5 Speed Auto. That's because Nissan never intended to sell them over the counter. In short I have had a long talk with Nissan about this on more than one occasion and managed to get a one issued to us because we were an Automatic Transmission Shop but when I saw these posts I again contacted Nissan putting everyone's point of views across.

I received a box full of brand new dip sticks today with an note telling me to distribute them as I pleased. Nissan still can't add them as a part number but I am grateful that they took the time to listen to what I had to say and in a round about way have made them available for us to sell over the counter. I'm just going to sell them for what they cost me in-store at $45 each inc gst. So if you know of anybody that wants one just let them know.

The part number is 31086-VC200.
They sell between $23.00 and $40.00. It appears Nissan are beginning to sell them retail now. Their excuse was that the auto took special oil, big deal.
If you have a co-operating local dealer you shouldn't have any dramas.

its true they come with no dipstick and they do not run a special oil they run a standard matic D fully synthetic Automativ transmition oil

The reason they DARE to sell them is beacause Nissan obviously have come up with a system which they deem is better suited to the then a dipstick. An auto trans does not need a dipstick to run, it is only ther for the convenience of owners.

People being people they do not like change & will resist it. People are calling for dipsticks instead of learning how to check it the new way so Nissan say "we can make some money out of this" so they sell them.

I personally think the new way is better because in a servicing point of veiw the transmission can be filled quicker as dipsticks form a restriction & overflow & can be a pain in the Russell (Coight).

If the tranny is not leaking then it will only require checking at service time, the level will not alter.

Its just a metter of adapting to change, thats all.

I'm 1000klms from any service center or spannerman. I rip an auto line off and oil pisses out everywhere.. I patch the shagged hose...
How the fuck do I know how much oil to put back in since it wouldnt be totally empty?

What %age below ZERO do you think Nissan would warrant a gearbox with not enough oil in it from this scenario?

yes.. much better cause you can fill the box 20 seconds faster :roll:

As I said earlier you fill them up the same as a manual transmission or a diff. You just fill it up until it dribbles out the fill plug.
