Diffs for buggy

Guys need some help choosing diffs. A mate and I have started planning and building a buggy zook, that will be running a standard 1.3lt, standard 5sd, 6.1:1 rock hopper tcase and lastly 39.5 Iroks.

The deal is that we want a cheap diff that A) Strong enough B)Wide C) has the right gearing option.

So far we have been looking at Hilux (no surprise their) and MQ diffs. A few things I would like to know is the width of these diffs and the gearing options.

We have been told that the ifs lux’s are wider then standard solids, and we were looking at IFS rear diff, and a standard front lux with the wider IFS hubs. We were going to use 5.29 gear ratio’s out of a Hiace.

What’s your opinion?

man...

i didn't think you posted anywhere other than off topic.

Hilux diffs would be a good weight for a buggy but you'd want to convert the cv's to ctm joints if you're gonna run 39's.

i was thinking Dana 60 reag and Dana 44 front in the buggy i'm planning with 39" Nitto Mud Graplers.

The MQs have proven to be pretty good so far for LJxtreem and sierrajim hopefullyy they can chime in with some details. The good thing with them is they seem to be pretty cheap to get and pumpkins are on the right side for a Sierra based buggy too

oh yeah ...

zooks have offset driveline.

What about Bundy rear diff????

Grimbo we are very keen for the MQ diff’s as they are apparently the same a D80. The problem is that the only ratio we can find is 4.56, and I’m not sure that will be low enough.

Roc70y, I would love D60 and D44 but the cost is a bit beyond us. As for the bundy rear that would be suited better if we can find one. If not we will just run a double cardin joint to make up for the angles.

Yeah something like CTM’s is what we will be doing

Krawla, on here runs a bundy rear on his zook and it got rid of all his vibration problems he was having with the hilux diffs.

MQ i believe has a WMS of 55" the rear centre is offset to drivers side, so i believe this is good for a zook, you can get 4.6 ratios, or, if you talk to screwy, he reakons you can get factory 4.88's out of MQ utes,

get some 30spline longs
id say u will neva go close to breaking them under a light zuk with stock motor

the MQ stuff will work out well for you. they are ~60mm wider than stock hilux, so getting close to the ifs hilux.
the front end will be pretty reliable under a light car. the CV itself it the same size as GQ, just the shafts are a tiny bit smaller.
don't get the big H260 rear, it is way overkill for what you want and gives up a fair bit of ground clearance. the smaller H233 will be plenty strong enough behind 4 cylinders. i think you'll find that 4.6 ratios will be fine behind your 6:1 t/case as well.

If the ratios available for the MQ's are an issue just throw in a rock block or something like that, you will end up with more gear options as well.

I've got the MQ diffs in my zook with 36's.

Very strong diffs however the cover plates do need to be plated as they do not like big rocks.

The rear diff is easy to work with as it has steel tubes, the front diff with a cast RHS can be a little harder to weld to, but it is possible.

Mock (Ljextreme) has shaved his MQ diffs for extra clearance.

What suspension are you looking at?

60series rear and hilux or 80 series front with chromo longs and chromo rear axles.

Thank's for the advice. I'm thinking about IFS lux rears up front, reverse shackle. The rear not to sure but either IFS rears, like front or some custom leaves. Most probably have to build a traction bar for the rear as well. Oh and it will most probably be spring over.

y ifs rears upfront imo its way overkill

Reason for the IFS rears upfont is so that we can push the diff forward enough to clear the big meat, but at the same time because hole is offset from the centre the tire should push out past the spring mount for better approach.

I can’t see how else we will clear the fire wall without doing this…

What's your thought's redzook?

use stock rears they give more axle forward

standard lux rears actually have a shorter side the ifs rears

when i measured mine i think there were bout 20.5" one side and round 27.5 the other side

the ifs are around 21.5 or 22 i think

Cool cheers for that I will have to do some more measuring but that sounds like your right.

Dewse if your worried about braking diffs go MQs lots available and very cheap plenty strong ,you will give up some ground clearance running them against hilux ones .Both are good for lots of parts and just to piss you of i picked up a ARB air locka today second hand for $450 just needs a pair of orings and a 1/8 fitting so the locrite is now going in the rear

You would be left a poor man it you had to build a Dana 44 diff to the same strength as a hilux with 30 spline longs. You also get better clearence with the hilux axles.
