Engine woes

Well the misses took my Roza over on the Ferry to Hobart and back, and I took my bike...
I topped up the oil before we left... (approx 1L)
We stopped on the way back to Devonport to check the oil, she then tells me the oil warning light came on briefly twice.. I top up the oil.. 2-2.5L later the oil level is perfect.. we get to Perth approx 100 k's later and I have to put in another .5-.75L unfortunetly the bottle ran out by this point.. *sighs*
We were running abit late so she was going flat stick the entire way to try and get to Devonport in time..
So looks like I'm checking the fuel and topping up the oil now... YAY!! I'm sure the hills had everything to do with the excess oil consumption as she had to keep it reved high to maintain the speed limit, where she could.
I think it's going to be time to re-build the donk, or change it over..
Does anyone have any idea what I'm looking at cost wise to replace the engine as an exchange, or to rebuild it? And is converting it to something else going to be worthwhile and not to expensive... ie Diesel turbo engine from a Rocky..
Any assistance to help me get an idea as to what I'm in for would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Dan,
sounds like the old crap fuel causing pinging which ends up stuffing your bottom end. Does she make a funny knocking noise at cold start now? If so, then that's prolly your problem. If that has happened, you're prolly better off doing a swap, as most people I spoke to that had ever attempted to rebuild had found the crank to be unservicable, and expensive/almost impossible to buy or reco.
I replaced my donk with an Applause motor in April last year and have been able to run whatever fuel is available since with absolutely no sign of pinging. Power on the highway is noticably better, even though I changed back to the original filter from an MRT rampod. I still haven't got round to fitting my extractors, but expect even better power once I do that.
I got mine from Ichiban in Sydeny just b4 I moved back to Melbourne, but I can prolly get a decent price on it.
The most noticable difference is the torque curve move up the range, but for the most part you adjust your driving accordingly. I notice you're in Melbourne, so I reckon you prolly won't notice too much degradation in offroad performance in VIC conditions, unless you get into hardcore rockhopping.
If you decide to do the Applause swap, gimme a shout and I can either assist or at least give you plenty of time-saving advice with some of the bits that are different externally on the motors (only minor, but can be time consuming).
Also, if going for an Applause donk, make sure the bolt pattern where the bellhousing bolts up is the same, as there are apparently a couple of different patterns. I think from memory we used a photo of the new ones to compare with the old one?

I've picked up a couple of those engines for around the $900 mark.
Fairly easy swap.

I'd also recommend doing the clutch while you,ve got the motor out. I used to get clutches from:

Even with courier costs, should be a shite load cheaper than most other places. I think I paid around $135.00 from memory.
I'm in Mt Waverley atm, but head out Fawkner way a bit with work. You're nice and close to Mt Dissapointment.

Clutch should be ok, it was only just changed before i bought it.
Is it costly to get the FWD engine to fit?

it is not so much the fwd motor that is the problem, if you can get an adapter so the box will bolt up to it, it would be ok, the only other things are the engine mount and exhaust manifold would be positioned differently

You just use your old engine mounts and exhaust mainfold. I left the new inlet manifold on the new motor, but there are a couple of differences, only minor.
The block is exactly the same, except for the few that have a different bellhousing bolt pattern. Otherwise, it'll bolt straight in, no stress. What year and model is your beast Dan?
Only other thing which may cause a bit of mucking around is if you have the small water jacket oil cooler, that can be a bit fiddly, otherwise easy.

the oil cooler was easy for me to get off once i had the correct tool... a 24mm deep socket i believe is what i used and it came right off. no problems!

ive got an old feroza engine sitting here but its shagged.ya can have the botom end for nuffin but i want $150 for the head coz it got reco'd 10,000km before a ring wore out

how much would it cost to get reco'd you recon? using the existing head...
