Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Had a bit of a problem last night. Jumped on the brakes and nothing happened! Had to use 1st gear and handbrake to stop. Just missed a brand new 5series BMW.
pulled in to a servo and pulled drivers rear drum apart and found that wheel cyclinder had pushed out a piston. shoes wernt completly worn out and wheel cyclinder was bolted in tight.
quick fix and drive home slowly leaving heaps of room.


now questions what would cause this??
whet is the maximum size of drum???
and what is the part number of the new replacenent shoes???
and lastly who does rear disc conversion kits and how much??

You should be able to stop without too much trouble with ZERO rear brakes. The fronts do most of the work, are you sure it's the rears that are the only problem????

still had some brakes but was trying to stop from 80km/h and was gettin rather close to the BMW. as soon as fronts grabbed the rears start and was just pumping fluid out the cyclinder.

sounds like they might have been out of adjustment and you just wore enough off the pads for it to push the cylinder out

It just reminded me to adjust my rear brakes. Pedal is traveling a little bit too long.

after this it gives me more reason to do a disc conversion. gonna start to collect parts to do it. will do a list of how i go and what i needed.

There is the posability that the drums have been machined larger to remove gruves from mud and gunk. So that may be why there is still material on the pads but no contact.
One more thing is called "bell mouth" when the drum distorts/ becomes larger at the open end(hard to explain).
With a tape measure you check along the inside of the drum for this.

I hope that helps, go the disc's, not as long lasting but better stopping.
