Outer Limits 4x4 Board

G'day I have just installed my gme3200 into my Nissan navara and I seem to be getting a lot of static when listening to people. Then when they are finished there is a carrier for a fair whilre after.

The problem gets worse when I turn the aircon on!!!

I have my wires going straight to the battery and my co-ax is wrapped in that platsic sleeving and taped up with elec tape. I have trieds all different way of passing it through the engine bay but there seems to be wiring everywhere which I think may be giving me the interference.

The arial is a self grounded one and is on the bull bar.

Any ideas or info?????????

try reterminating connections. could be some thing simple.

Is there static with engine running? If yes is it petrol. If yes then you may need to fit suppressors to spark plug leads.
If static when engine not running then it will be the installation and re-soldering connections etc will help

The engine is the new turbo diesel the navaras have. I dont know if they effect it aswell. Can you get a suppressor for the uhf to cut out interference or something.

The only connection I can think of re-doing is the co-ax end. I have done this twice already though.

Ther only other conections are the power and earth which I soldered some new wire to the old wire just near the plug. I used heavier duty wire but that shouldn't cause any dramas should it.

There a littlle static when the engine is off but it gets worse when it is on and especially when the air con is on.

I earthed mine as close to the uhf as possible, just a thought but maybe some interference from the length of cable. Also my power comes from the battery but runs through a relay so it is switched with the accessories on the ignition.

does the static change with the engine revs???

im no expert but it may be interference from the alternator i think

Make sure the antenna is grounded properly. YOu may need to put in an additional ground to a known good earth from the antenna base. Sometimes the powdercoating on Bullbars does not provide a suitable earth. You shouldnt need to sheild your coax--it already has an inbuilt shield.

Don't run the power cable or the coax along side other cable, try moving the cable around the engine bay.

Cheers for your help guys. I have tried everything and it dosent seem to fix it. I was able to narrow the interference down to coming from the air con fan as when I disconnect that the problem stopped. I put a suppressor in line with it but it did not help. The guy who sold it to me said it was very hit and miss.

The only way the problem is stopped is when I put the aerial at the back of the car so I will have to find a suitable mounting position and system.

1. if you upgrade the coax to the stuff that they use for mobile phones as it has an extra shielding in it to prevent this sort of thing happenning.
2. what type of areial are you running, and is it mobile flutter ussually cased from 4.5 Db stainless steel whips.
3. When replacing coax making sure ALL wires are terminated correctly

The good stuff is called RG58 CellFoil and its made by RFI.
