Outer Limits 4x4 Board

How long should I expect my shocks to last?
I upgraded to the 4way toughdog Adjustables (bigbores) 10months ago and now the rear left leaks oil ALL the time. Also the lower rubber is all but worn through. Strange that it's just the one unit.
I think it's a dud!
Has anyone else had issues.

but you shouldnt have to use warranty on these things all the time.. They shouldnt fail, you shouldnt 'hear similar problems'..... Ranchos are the same..

I say stick to proven things like OME, or KONI's...

A bloke in the club had a similiar prob with his, took em back and had em replaced under warrenty which is good but as Bogged stated "it shouldn't happen!"
I hope mine last longer and are truoble free.

no probs with mine but I only had about 10,000km on them when I flipped. got to keep the grease up to the poly end bushings or they flog out pretty quickly. is the integral bumpstop in the shock still good or has it been smashed? if you have the 6" shocks in a 5" lift or lower (or if it has sagged) they can bottom pretty hard even on fairly mild articulation. Any shock will break if you exceed its capacity for compression or extension, and being a twin-tube, foam cell shocker it is prone to overheating and seal failure, as is any other, if overheated by heavily laden/high speed driving on rough surfaces like corrugations.

as the others have said, they will warranty it without question, but that doesn't really solve your problem.

One thought, if your supposed to replace shocks in pairs should I be pushing to get the other rear replaced as well? Or is that a myth...

nothing to lose by trying to get the pair replaced, but I doubt they'll go for it - if the other one is good then it shouldn't be noticably different to a new one.

had a good look at these, they certainly look thee beef, big tubes massive pistons/rods and .........
















rod eyes that are "just" tacked on.


then looked at some procomps next to them and they were welded fully.

have heard this b4 around here on that.. major suspension component that could cause an accident, you would think they would spend $.0000000000000000001cents on extra weld...

How did they get proven ??

driving to the shops every week and down to coast on holidays once a year. the hubs get locked in to back the boat down the ramp.

Well 2,500Kms in two weeks of fully packed offroading in TAS is a pretty good test for the TD's, but why one side and not the other, especially in regards to the rubber bushy thingy wearing out.

So what's the alternative if you want an adjustable shock?

Nah eveything is intact and fine other than Oil pissing out and the lower eyelet rubbers cracking up and perishing.

Flipped?? You mean you installed them upside down?

The Sales dude, said this is wear and tear, and happens, I dont agree, why are all the others still in perfect condition then?
Bottom line is I have to drop the truck in for them to pull the unit and send it off to be assesed, all the while I'm without my ride in the peak season! Did I mention that this really sucks!

Tell them you require a courtesy car while they do that.. That place that sells ranchos in castle hill, told difflock dan he could buy a new set of shocks while they sent the old ones away for testing... then if the old ones were fubar, he would have a spare set

that's crap. if it's leaking, and within the warranty period, they should swap it without question. when it gets back to TD,, they won't even look at it, just chuck it in the warranty box and ship it back to the manufacturer.

But at some stage they must have been new and unproven .. if we stuck to the tried and proven we never would have got away from the horse and cart.

Koni maybe but we took 8 vehicles across the simpson and the only vehicles that didn't have any suspension problems were fitter with either Koni or Bilsteins.every vehicle that had OMEs fitted had at least 2 shocks fail and one had all 4 fail that required a backtrack to get the new shocks that had to be air freighted out.By the way Rancho is an internal subsidiary of Monroe that make OME shocks.So the rubbish is just piled out the same factory door under another name.

I used to sell OME, I liked them but Pajero rears would regularly fail under warrenty as would R50 Terrano rears, torn lower eyes.
I tried leaving the Paj lower mount bolt slightly loose with loctite in case tne bush was clamping too tight but still had them come back.

that is ridiculous, telling you to buy another set, i hope that guy told him he should not have another set because the manufacturer was so incompetent.

Who is the NSW distributer for KONI shockies, any ideas???? Do they have a model for the 4" spring lifts???? found them by accident : www.toperformance.com.au

I have Konis and have not had a problem. Also used them on my race car. Even so, I cant believe that they dont have a lot of good competition. A shock absorber is a pretty simple device - surely the dedicated offroad shock makers like tough dog, ome, etc, should cream Konis.
I have been wandering if choosing Konis was a good step with all the purpose-built offroad shocks on the market.

Really, is it the shocks or the vehicle suspension design thats the problem?

I would want to be sure that on a long trip the shockies would out last other components.
