So I have 35s on a GQ LWB td4.2. am happy with onroad power, it certinly doesn't lack power, but hard stuff particularly going down big steps etc is a little to fast for my likeing so the do I change the diff ratios, and how much can I expect to pick up ratios for or just go a set of crawlers which I think would be fine for me offroad ana as I siad happy with onraod at the moment and how much for crawlers?

i was at the same stage as u tiny
i ended up gettting some 4.6 for Gu they'll go in this friday.
I just sick of on road when changing gears there was just to much of a drop between gears.
Offroad it was to fast coming down.
I thought about crawler gears i may do them in the future.
Note: there was guy down here in vic who had a complete set and transfer for $1200 (new unusesd)

Thing is I am happy with on road....10pound on the turbo and it is AOK and cruises nicly at 110 on the highway at around 2500 rpm so fuel ecconamy is good, but yeah a bit fast on big decents....scared me on the weekend hard on the brakes almost stalling and was just too bloody fast

1) Diffs affect EVERYTHING
2) Rockhoppers only affect LOW RANGE.
3) Twin transfercases - the ultimate....
You have to work out from there what you want.

Bogged,
I didn't know you could do a twin on a GQ.......is it possible? how much of a frig around? effectivly I don't really want to change high range and I assume that crawlers will give me a lower low range than just changing diff ratios???
by the time you change diff ratios the price would be similar to crawlers but I dant want to do both....I know it woulf give me an extremly low range but I dont know if it would be worth it for me!!!

My TB42 with 34 JT2's and 4.1s sits at 2000 rpm at 100 km/h. That is pretty much perfect. I do however want to slow it down off road. Looks like crawler gears are the go.

Call Cheezy. he has them in the Mav.

Crawler gears will lower low range by shit loads. EG 30k's flat out. so low becomes crawling, no use for cruising.

Thanks mate, I think that may be the go

assuming you have 4.1 diff ratios;
you now have:
~37:1 low range 1st gear
~19:1 high range 1st gear
changing to 4.6 diff ratios you will have:
~42:1 low range 1st gear
~21:1 high range 1st gear
changing to marks t/case gears you will have:
~70:1 low range 1st gear
~19:1 high range 1st gear
changing diff ratios to 4.6 & changing to marks t/case gears you will have:
~78:1 low range 1st gear
~21:1 high range 1st gear
you can still get good speed with the lower t/case gears in low range.
your low range 5th will be become the same as low range 3rd is now. you are then getting into speeds where you would be in high range anyway.
the ebenfit with dual cases is that you have nissan 2.02:1 low range untill you put both cases into low, then you get 4.0804:1......

With 35" tyres I run 4.375 diff and a Marks Low range transfer set.
This works out to be a good combination with a Turbo 4.2 D.
Revs at 100kph is 2240.
Non Turbo is better with 4.625. Revs about 2450.
Initiallly I thought the low range was too low as it affected touring thru the bush and keeps you at about 30kph in 4th low. I now stop and go back to High if a distance is involved. Ni more probs.
Tailshaft stays standard length too and xfer gears fis with no major hassles.

I've got a non-turbo TD42 and putting the 4.6's in is the best thing I've done. Standard gearing returned and the whole "running away dwn hills (offroad)" went away.
Mind you, the next thing on my shopping list is a set of Mark's gears, which I hope to get soon.
Go 4.6's first though!!

I would definitely go the transfer gears before the diff gears especially if you are happy enough with onroad performance.
I have 4.6's with a turbo diesel and with 35" tires it is still too high in low range when you are going down hills and when you want to crawl up stuff. I am getting gears aswell so should rectify the prob.
Note: there was guy down here in vic who had a complete set and transfer for $1200 (new unusesd)
These are now sold!!!

Transfer gears are the way to go. 2nd gear low range down steep hills and she will just idle down. Cost works out better as well.
Marks gearmasters (try for a show special) $1250 and you can fit yourself in a day.
Ratio's from GJ around $1200 and you need to spend around $500 + to get them fitted (not including any bearings).
