Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ok, my truck is in unregistered and will most likely be laying dorment for four or five more months. what are the tips yoou might have for it? so far i have been starting it up once a week and driving around the paddock, but i can never get over ~ 20km/h. the other thing is i have a small tarp over it with the windows down a bit. i also hose it down every second week too.

so for all those with trucks sitting in your yard, what are the tips you have for me?

Heres what I did. I completely dismantled it about 3 years ago and left bits strewn throughout the yard........Dont do this.

With my car I left it with my brother to start and take it for arun every now and then. He picks me up from the airport after which my first question is "what is that clunking noise" he claims not to hear it. Not long after the exhaust wraps around the drive shaft and makes a mess. Hed backed into somehting and didnt feel like repairing it or telling me.......Dont do this.

what I did with mine was put it in the shed. Then i said "next week I'll fix those problems and get the rwc done". Then i put the lawn mower under it as i needed to store it somewhere. Then some gardening tools went onto the bonnet as it was easier to get to them rather than walk around the Zuk to where they should be. Then I used the tray to spread my tools out on as it was a good work bench. Then i said "next week I'll fix those problems and get the rwc done".Then i said "next week I'll fix those problems". Then i pumped up the flat tyre and jump started it to get it going.

Did all of this for about 18 months and am now ready to take it in to be re registered this friday

Otherwise I'll look after it for you and take it for a drive now and then, give 80lsy gq a call, I'm sure he'd offer to give it a drive now and then too

I belive thats you should not drive it even thoug its registered ..

I would ask a friend or relo to take you for a spin in it every now and then, even if its only once a fortnight.

But if yor going to leave it sit, pull the battery out, drain the fuel and whack it on some blocks .. 4 or 5 months is not all that long .. you could do nothing at all and it will be quite OK .. perhaps will need a jump start to get going again, but that would be about it ..

I bought one of those fancy solar powered chargers to keep my battery topped up.

When you take it for a drive (or someone else does) make sure you have your hubs locked in and everything (AC etc) running to make sure everything gets turned around and re-lubed up.

Then don't lose you licence again.............

Why are you hosing it down? Are you trying to get it to grow? If so park on a big pile of horse shit!:D

Serioulsy - sounds like a good plan. i had one sit for over a year (i was selling it at the end though) And everything seem OK. Didn't have any dramas!

dude d/c battery and let it sit should be fine......my 4by sat for 2yrs in garage and besides new batterythats it,although i treated it like it was a new/fresh motor when started first time..(turned engine no spark to lubricate) etc etc...let car sit in gear(auto)4 a while to lube up entire auto b4 driving......i know sounds like overkill but better to be safe

They say that lack of use of the Air Cond dries out the seal at the front of the pump and the system discharges, run the Air cond.

I disconnect battery, have a small trickle charger that keeps the battery charged, it cuts in and out as the battery loses charge, so no flat battery's,(there about $70 I think, good idea if your not drivin it every day), and start it up every now and again, but it also now has stuff stored on it, around it, and now inside the cab, bloody expsensive storage box.
Also I try not to leave much diesel in the tank, as diesel will go stale if stored for long periods

yeah no worries mick,i will look after it for you...i could park it in the backyard and drive it out the front once a week and put it up against my missus commodore on the travel ramp.. then when im done i will do a high speed flyby of your place (probably reach about 30km/h with a tailwind) followed by a trip to going-ups place so he can practice his panel beating skills on it.. and then down to antts where we will apply the 76 coats of taxi orange ... i might even have a spare nissan badge somewhere i could wack on it for you to increase the value...




seriously though if you do want to take it for a spin i would drive you somewhere in it(as long as we can get a tow home from someone) and as said you really should start it at least once a week,drive it in 4wd and run the air con at a minimum...you should have no dramas with it at all....

One of the worst things you can do is leave a car parked on grass for a long period of time. You'll kill the grass!

But seriously, its a great way to rust out the underbody - constant condensation every day on the underbody - if you've got concrete or even dry gravel, leave it on that.

And, when you do take it for a run, get the engine to operating temperature and try and keep it there for at least 15 mins or so.

Get a "charge and maintain" battery charger which simulates use and keeps the battery charged but doesn't over charge it.

Car batterys hate being run totally flat and then re-charged, the cells in them ususally collapse.

The charge and maintain series work well I have a friend who uses them on his citroen and porsche. The citroen gets driven maybe 10 times a year and the porsche has been out of action for 8 months while he has been turboing it.

There are heaps of web pages on vehicle storage things like putting machine oil down the spark plug holes and turning it over by hand regulary etc, do a seach on google
